haha sorry mate I've only got love for...
Have A look at this at your trailer weight I would rule out an xtrail any going over 1400 seem to have problems , http://www.caravantrekker.nl/whattowcar/gebruikservaring.php?merk=Nissan&serie=X-Trail
Getting number dislexia :augie I put 45.46 litres of diesel + 200ml acetone every 3rd tank(reduce fuel by 200ml) & get 400 miles per fill week in week out = 40mpg but its not A terrano
18,000  can you get hold of acetone 100% pure ? 100ml to 20 litres approx can help clean system :naughty and usually helps emmissions ,smoother more economic & more power
You get used to it but then I used to have A load of old centre clocked minis so that probably helped , the older engine is the nissan yd22 di 2.2 litre not as powerful as the post 03 dci renault engine but more robust
as an afterthought if your looking at an initial cheap but much more off road something have A look at lpg'd grand cherokees on flea bay get good return eg 19 to gallon on lpg = approx 30 to gallon on petrol & loads of comfort :D
I take it your not looking at actual heavy off road maybe cross A field once in A while in uk ? Have an xtrail di older nissan engine which doesnt give too much bother does 35 to 40 mpg you may get A cheap 2003 on ebay but otherwise your looking approx 4k as far as being pointless goes if you...
As far as I read the first post it wasnt rumbling when driving which to me means probably just A noisy clutch release bearing which I have had on various machines in past which while annoying lasted for ages:nenau
