    4x4 Insurance

If 4x4 insurance is anything like classic insurance, then sadly the only way to get a good deal is to actually phone up. I'm considering specific 4x4 insurance as I'd like a bit of freedom to consider modifications (slippery and expensive slope perhaps!).

    off to wales!

When are you here? I've just been checking out the Nant-y-Moch lanes. We (West Wales Laning) have done a lot of repairs there, but I'm pleased to say that cocking a wheel is still easy enough!

    What to look for

They don't really hide it. Front wings bubble up around their edge, above the plastic trim and sills rot out at the rear end. You can easily see the rear seatbelt mounting in the rear wheelarch. I'd say they've got a pretty good rust record compared to some, but when they go, they really do...

What do you get for membership??

It is an interesting question. Who actually gets the money and what do they do with it? I'm certainly not complaining. I've more than had my tenner's worth.

    Wheel fell off - oops

That's not as outrageous as it sounds. The only thing holding the brake drum in place is the wheel. As I discovered when testing the rear brakes on mine with the rear on axle stands. Oops!

    Wheel fell off - oops

I've had the nuts on my Mav come loose twice now. Both times thankfully I got plenty of warning, with all sorts of clonks. Tightened them up and all was well. I tend to check them quite often now...

    off to wales!

I believe we can help with that! That's the Golf Links byway near Rhayader, not too far from Aber. My Maverick is quite used to looking like a pissing dog! It's always cocking a wheel.

    off to wales!

Well, Fez and I can provide the stock vs modded demonstration quite easily!

    off to wales!

And me! Another pootle around the lanes looking likely then? Quite keen to see how the Nant-y-Moch repairs are holding up.

    Possibly Buying a new car

The Puke (sorry, Juke) is the latest abomination from Nissan. British built! Horrible. I've heard of plenty of people having issues with the Jazz, including gearboxes but also PAS units. However, I like cars that cost less than a grand, so I have no realistic suggestions!

    changing lower gears at speed

I've read this twice and I'm afraid it still makes no sense to me.

    garbox don't feel right

I'd suspect a clutch issue. If it doesn't engage fully, the forward gears will feel very stiff and reverse will crunch. You may be able to stop the reverse crunch by selecting a forward gear before selecting reverse.

    transfer box autopsy

Ah. You're not the only one who'd like that option! Great for slow-speed manoeuvers or towing.

    mpg 2.4

Indeed! 20-22mpg at best (well, also at worst in my experience. It doesn't vary much!). As has been said, the only way to accurately measure MPG is to fill the tank completely. The gauge seems very unreliable - the last quarter seems to disappear in no time, the first quarter takes ages.

    front live axle???

Personally I quite like waving wheels in the air. Looks quite dramatic but the rear limited slip diff usually keeps me moving.

    my new jap 4x4

And there was I thinking we were building up a nice group of J-tin lovers in the local laning group! :p Swings and roundabouts really. Land Rovers are much better in some areas than T2s, but definitely not in others. Will be interesting to see how you get on with it (get that bloody light pod...

    Sunroof Rattle

You really don't need a pic. Just tilt the sunroof, stand on the sill and look into the gap. You'll see the two screws near the rear corners. Getting something in is the tricky bit - I used a ratchet and a pozi driver. Does transform the driving experience!

    3 Door T2

I thought that was just to release them forward! I'll have a play tomorrow. Not that anyone has been anywhere near the back seats yet. They're only up to stop stuff in the boot rolling around.

    3 Door T2

One thing I really dislike about my SWB is the way the back seat is so upright. I've sat there to check what it's like and it's really not pleasant! I assume the 5dr has a better set-up. Depends how much you like the person who's going to sit there I guess!

    Dollywobbler's Maverick

Finally took the Maverick down Strata Florida this evening. Another Maverick you may recognise was there. Check out the differences! Coped with the bombhole ok (both ways!). I did bash the underside quite a few times. No damage done thankfully. There are a LOT of rocks on Strata! Some are...
