hi all i keep on changing from high gears at speed say 40mph at 4th gear then down to 2nd to stop stalling it stalling when braking then slip it to nutual once stoped fast braking

then all hear a realy bad crunch lasting until i go into higher gear its usually happens when im going around the country bends or down a narrow bridge

is my gear box on its way out other wise ill have to get rid of this terrano and by one that's has a good body and engine :(

when im at speed at 40 mph then change to lower gears say second i hear a loud crunching nose like when you put a reverse gears when moving forwards :nenau

Your changing down from 4th to 2nd at 40mph ????

are u trying to say that u change down into 2nd and whip the clutch up to brake/slow down???:doh if thats what ur doing u'll reck ur gearbox by chewing teeth! very boy racer way of slowing quickly.

lol i never had that problem im my multipla

keep that up and you will be needing a new gear box, have you thought about getting an auto? :lol

the terrano engines run at a lower speed than normal cars. so don't like slowing down with gears, but standard cars don't mind it as much:thumb2

slap it in second at 40? I am surprised your multipla didn't go bang, why would you do that? maybe from 5th to 4th and 4th to 3rd yes. I have always used a degree of slowing down with the gears but this seems a bit extreme - no a lot extreme!

lol

sounds like you've bought the wrong car duh

I've had every type of car over years, was a mechanic for 7 years, I've done track days, had tuition etc etc and engine braking is a thing of the past, its pointless unless your brakes have failed

The police don't teach/use engine braking whatsoever for response driving, they teach you to brake with the brakes, then select the correct gear for the speed and peak power, and off you go

I hunt the gear box when on the move, always keeping in peak power, always have, particularly in my boy racer days with revvy twin cam 2.0's and turrbo petrol lumps, but i never used engine braking. The only time i have is when i had an old bmw that i didn't really give a shit about, I'd slam it down the box into corners and roundabouts to step the rear end out as the engine braking would stop or slow the rear wheels to less than the speed i was moving at. A good laugh but the car was a shed ready for the scrap yard. If you want your terrano to see the scrappy soon, then carry on :)

What you have is basically a lorry/truck and the engine is basically a small low reving truck engine

Diesel engines are built for torque and low revs, not peak power, the gearboxes are slow and heavy as they are over engineered and massive compaired to your passenger car due to the fact they have to tow serious loads and get beaten up offroad etc

Dont get me wrong, i thrash the knackers off my truck, it gets jumped and allsorts, but i dont over rev it !!! and I change quick but smooth, and dont drop the clutch when changing down etc

Sometimes i clutch it a slight bit to provoke a slide in the wet, but thats more likely to cause the clutch to fail prematurely and the wheels are nearly breaking traction when i do it so the tyres take the hammer

well iv totally stopped that now :doh:doh:doh:doh:doh:doh

thanks guys for the info i have stopped taking for longs rides as its costing 20 quid a day so far all ready put 300 miles on the clock :naughty:naughty
