The battery was being charged because the car is only used in the grounds of the property for regular but very short runs, so tends to need a boost fairly regularly especially when the weather is cold.

Hi The separate switch does not stay down when you let go - ie it is sprung (it might be called a momentary switch?). So, could the switch still be switching on the glowplugs?
