As far as I can see the spill valve is the part of the return path to the main tank, as such it purpose may be something to do with maintains the internal pump pressure? Which makes me wonder if the delivery pressure from the tank pump is low or marginal?

The front prop differs in length. The fully closed length can be either 645mm or 605mm. Not sure that the rear is different....

Possibly because some clutch assembly's will exhibit a rough low frequency vibration during operation and the damper pipe will absorb much of this....

I'd consider disconnecting the heater hoses at the bulkhead and attaching the garden hose to the inlet. This will: A) prove if the heater valve is open or not? B) if it is open, will flush it and confirm through flow.

It could be the hub of the speedo pointer binding on the overlay behind. Check the clearance behind the needle hub and the overlay. Ambient temperature can have a significant influence in making the behaviour appear somewhat random..

I recall that the "high gear" whether that's OD or top I am not sure, will only engage once the ATF temperature is above something like 40 plus deg. C. So, when testing make sure the box is up to normal temps before making definate conclusions.
