I don't believe it, I have looked this Terrano up and down before buying it and forgot to check it in low box. :doh

Bells should have rung last week when I lifted the carpet and found that the rubber moulding around both gear sticks had not been secured down properly and the metal skirt which should be on top of the outer edge of the rubber was underneath the outer edge. it looks like someones been here before :(

Today I discovered that I can only select 2WD or 4 WD ( there are only two possible positions ) and to get 4WD I need to push down on the stick ( I remember on the old terrano that I had to push down to get 4WD+low). There is absolutely no movement any further - it's solid as if there wasn't supposed to be a low box on this car.

It's as if the 2H is where the 4H should be and the 4H is where the 4L should be.

There is a slightly springy don't want to force it feeling if I push the lever further up than the 2H position.

Could it be that the position of the selector relative to the box is out of sync?

Any ideas much appreciated.

many thanks

Rich

Has it had a body lift? This can effect it.

I select neutral with gear lever and let the clutch up with hand brake on of course. Then I try selecting the low box.

Hope you get sorted.

It's all standard - just like my old terrano - I've tried what you've suggested and a good 10mins trying all sorts of tricks but it's not showing any signs of going in, the stick has no movement whatsoever any further than 4H. :(

It could just be lack of use:thumb2
I had similar probs on the Troll on our weekend away. It wasn't keen on going into 4H from 2H, after a bit of fiddling n waggling it freed up.
Then couldn't get4L for love or money. Again more lifting n pushing and in it went, I think that the low shift lever siezes up on the shaft or in the guide.
Previous owner probs had the carpet up trying to free it up.
By the end of the weekend it was slik as you'd want:thumb2

Don't worry about this :thumb2 Easy fix, I had exactly the same issue and kicked myself for not testing low box when I was test driving it, I literally did everything else, the guy even commented and asked me if In could come with him next time he buys a car :lol

I got it on the ramp at work, sent it up in the air, loosened the bolts holding the guide plate to the box and whilst I worked the lever backwards and forwards my guy underneath was gently tapping it with a hammer and eventually there was a reassuring clunk and the lever found a new home :thumb2 :thumb2

The plus side of this issue you have a truck that the 4WD has been used very little in or not at all, the down side to this is the fluid will probably be original so get it drained and swapped out

That's reassuring, I certainly don't think the last owners used 4WD at all.

I planed to change the gearbox oil next weekend - so the transfer box needs an oil change too :thumbs

What oil goes in the transfer box?

Aye, don't panic. My 4L was fine when I first got the truck. Went to select it a few weeks ago and it was solid. Just as you say, it was as though it was hitting a solid steel wall. I haven't sorted it yet, but I'm convinced it's just through lack of use :thumb2

Found it!!

I decided to have a go at this on Saturday.

I took out the centre console again and removed the rubber gaiter and saw the plate immediately. I tried to move the selector but found the peg would not move any further down the slot so it seemed like there was something jammed in the box. I took the plate off and then the stick could easily be moved into low box!!!! :clap

I put the plate back on and then there was no low box :(

I took the plate off and there was low box :clap so I greased it up and put it back on .....

There was no low box :banghead

After much scratching of head and following the track in the plate I worked it out.

Some absolute numpty has been here before, taken off the plate for what ever reason and put it back on ..... THE WRONG WAY ROUND!!!

I now have low box all working properly :thumbs

Hahaha!!! What a dipstick. I've had the same issue, but it was down to the lever being seized and not pushing down enough to clear the gate. I had my dash out recently and just removed the plate altogether. Low box is back on mine too :augie
