Loss of Drive - All Gears - Terrano 2

Had a hard day at work on Monday, and the heat was unbearable, but yesterday evening (Day 10) I spent a couple of hours on the truck and managed to get the clutch slave cylinder on, reconnected all the gearbox wiring, cleaned off all of the rust from the torsion bar splines and fitted the front...

Loss of Drive - All Gears - Terrano 2

Thanks Guys, it's much appreciated... Day 9... I only spent a couple of hours on truck today, as I had to work and I was a bit knackered. That said, I was able to torque up all the bell housing, except for the one behind the engine which I could only get my modified spanner on. I hope not...

Loss of Drive - All Gears - Terrano 2

Today (Day 8) things have gone a lot better, I was able to have a good chat with Rick on the phone (thanks again Rick it was really helpful) and I followed his advice and I pulled the gear box back again, removed the clutch and followed his instruction to check for any damage caused by my...

Thanks. I hope the mistakes I am making are equally helpful to others. Regards Alan

I kept thinking that would be a good idea, but I was worried that the floor pan wouldn't be strong enough. It would certainly help to get the gearbox under control and at the correct height. Maybe next time... Let's hope that never happens! :) Regards Alan

That is sound advice, which on this occasion I didn't heed, no offence intended of course. I do appreciate the encouraging words though. They really have kept my pushing on. Regards Alan

Loss of Drive - All Gears - Terrano 2

Thanks for your late posts yesterday Rick, apologies for not replying, but I was done in after getting cleaned up and sitting down. I hope that I haven't deformed the drive plate, but as you state in your last post I don't seem to be able to get the shaft to 'snick' in. I am positive your...

Loss of Drive - All Gears - Terrano 2

A day of highs and lows... I hope my shared experiences of doing this job are helpful, which is why today (Day 7) I spent a few hours this morning unbolt in the clutch, then a bit of running round to pick up parts followed by bolting them on... Finally starting to rebuild... Great... You might...

Yes, I was pleased to find the problem was easily diagnosed. New clutch purchased and now bolted onto flywheel. I bought a Sachs job from EuroCarParts... £175.00. I also bought a Sealey alignment kit for £25.00. It was all going well up to this point... Regards Alan

Loss of Drive - All Gears - Terrano 2

Three Parts? After spending 10 minutes cleaning up the tools I abandoned on the garage floor last night, this morning I have got the clutch off and found it to be in three separate parts, which clears up the root of the transmission problem. Next job is to try to get the thrust bearing off...

Loss of Drive - All Gears - Terrano 2

Maybe not mandatory Rick, but always gratefully recieved and heeded. Your not joking about the gearbox, and I can fully appreciate the engine out approach now, especially if you have the kit/resources to do it. It is very cumbersome to get out. Getting it back in is, I anticipate, going to be...

Loss of Drive - All Gears - Terrano 2

So far I have spent £30.00 on the adapter for the jack, I anticipate a cost of around £150.00 for the clutch. That's as long as I don't break anything in the meantime though. Luckily over the years I have acquired a varied range of tools, which if you had to buy for the one job, might be...

Thanks Jim, very kind of you to say so. Very steep learning curve on this job and lots of problem solving. My head hurts as much as my arms and back now :) Hopefully I will be be able to start reassembly very soon... Fingers crossed! Regards Alan

Loss of Drive - All Gears - Terrano 2

Gearbox is loose!!! Yesterday (Day 5) I spent a couple of hours beefing up the timber stabiliser on the trolley jack, and lifted the front up a couple of inches. This evening (Day 6) I set about removing the bell housing bolts, the top two may have been the two most difficult ones to reach on...

Thanks, Rick & Banshee, I will bolt a similar size piece of timber on the top of the existing just to be safe. Oh no thrust bearing... that sounds like something else to worry about :) I have borrowed the flexible camera in the image below, wich might help. Regards Alan

Loss of Drive - All Gears - Terrano 2

I hope that I will still be able to do this kind of work in 15 years, although the way I feel now after looking at the underside of it for three days, I am beginning to wonder :) Day 4... This afternoon progress wasn't so good, I got the exhaust bracket off, and then spent a couple of hours...

Loss of Drive - All Gears - Terrano 2

Thanks for the words of encouragement, and for the idea of making something up to stabilise the jack. I am going to look into that. As I get older this type of endeavour gets more challenging... I passed the half-century mark this year:( I am knocking off work early today, so I hope the...

Loss of Drive - All Gears - Terrano 2

Thanks for warning and advice Rick. I will try to enlist some help on that part if it is only to operate the up and down movement of the jack (I'm sure she will help!). I will also lash the gearbox to the jack with a couple of ratchet straps, which may help keep it all under some control. When...

Loss of Drive - All Gears - Terrano 2

Day 3... Spent a couple of hours after work today, and managed to get the passenger side torsion bar off. I had to use the same method as yesterday, as it was siezed onto the bracket on the front wishbone solid. Following that I unbolted the rear crossmember, which was jammed in super tight...
