I have a 1998 Y61 Patrol GR SE TD 2.8 and have an interesting problem with the wipers and washers.

At the moment when I use the wiper stalk I have no washers, no intermittent wipe and no self park! The wipers work at normal or fast speed but I have to time it right to park them!

The washer pumps are fine though - give them 12V and they work!

I have a copy of the Y61 service manual and after going over the wiring diagram with Paul (PRS Autos) the only thing we can think of is that it's a problem with the "wiper amp".

The problem is we can't figure out where this wiper amp is located!!

Been on google and everything I've found says it's in the engine bay near the battery. We've looked and we definitely cannot see it!

Does anybody have any idea where this wiper amp is located?

Cheers.

On a Terrano 2 I can help, but a Y61 I have no idea, but I can have a look tomorrow on my Y60, just may give a clue, but yes your symptoms are exactly the wiper amp, Rick

I have that as well with an air con pipe running over it, it is now permanently bent out of the way, otherwise the cover cannot be removed, but I have two other control boxes near the brake servo, one of which is for the front wiper, the other could be for the rear but as the motor is missing I am not able to say, Rick

I believe my wiper amp is bolted to the drivers side inner wing adjacent to the first fuse/relay block near the battery.
You can follow the loom from the wiper motor straight to it :thumb2

Many thanks for all the responses/suggestions

I have to admit I thought what I was after might not come to anything so maybe there's hope after all!!

Guess I now know what I'm doing on Saturday!

Will let you know how it goes - minus any swearing :lol

@macabethiel - I checked your link and I already have that on my watch list! Great minds or something like that.

Cheers.

Well, we finally got a chance to follow your suggestions and have a good look for the wiper amp!

Result: nothing! We cannot find it!

It is definitely not on the drivers side inner wing adjacent to the fuse/relay - I've attached a couple of pics of that area.

It's not under the battery.

We checked the one on the rear right hand quarter panel but it's for the rear wiper and has a different connector.

We poured over the electronic copy of the service manual and, based on what we saw in the attached 2 diagrams, figured it must be inside the passenger compartment behind the dashboard. I've highlighted the connector in the diagrams.

After a couple of hours, and with the dashboard in bits, we still couldn't find it!!

One thing that's a bit worrying is that there isn't a single diagram in the manual that shows the front wiper amp. The only mention of a wiper amp we can find is the rear wiper amp in one of the body harness diagrams.

As you can imagine we are now totally stumped!!

Any ideas would be gratefully accepted.

Cheers.

Sorry can't upload the harness and wiring diagram pdf's as they're too big!

Not a car I know, so can't help with specifics, but the symptoms sound like you are missing a fuse or a broken wire, rather than a faulty relay.

Generally, the self park, washers, and intermittent wipe normally run off an ignition switched live feed, that then triggers the wiper relay. The fact that the wipers actually work, kind of implies the relay is in fact working.

The wiper motor has a switch in it, that when the wipers are not in the park position, hold the wiper relay on to keep the wipers moving till they get into the right place to park, where the switch opens, and the wipers then stop, equally, the intermittent wipe uses the same circuit to fool the relay into thinking the wipers are not parked, just long enough for the wipers to move, then it drops out, and the self park feature takes over, re-parking the wipers till the next time.

I would double check the fuses, as you should have 2 for the wipers, although the self park one is not always labelled up, as you would normally find other things on the same circuit, that you would notice also not working. Other than that, check the terminals in the wiper motor plug, as it sounds like that wire it broken somewhere.
