Hi folks! Just joined but don't own a Nissan 4x4 as yet! Currently running a Hyundai Elantra 2.0 turbo diesel which was only supposed to be a stop gap between the Subaru Forester that I used to run and whatever I go for next......I've had it 2 Years now ! It's my first experience of diesel power and it's been ultra reliable! The characteristics of a diesel engine just seem to suit my style of driving with the amount of torque that seems to be availiable at relatively low revs but still gets up a good rate of knots when needed if you can keep the turbo spinning! So, what's happened is I miss the 4wd and have fallen in love with diesels and hope to get a caravan in the near future so I've come to the conclusion after a lot of research that a Terrano 2 could be the answer :thumb2. The price of parts for the Subaru were just too prohibitive for me although it was a cracking motor but I have always admired Nissans in general (Used to own a Bluebird many moons ago) and will have around £1500 squids to spend the end of next Month so it's going to be a fairly elderly one! I have started looking around now and researching, I love the look of the Terrano too although that's not a major consideration, anyway, I look forward to being a member and corresponding with you all at some point, magic :thumbs !!!

Welcome Jimbo, a T2 TDi is a cracking tow motor, I have a 98 and tow regular at 4,5 tonnes gross, (car trailer with an off road T2 on it) and it is rock steady at 70 no problem, Rick

Welcome aboard, yeah well can't fault your ideas of a Terrano. They're all starting to be classed as elderly now sadly, 3 litre is nice and does more mpg with more power to boot. However the trusty 2.7 is pretty much bullet proof, gear driven timing so no chains or belts to worry about. Biggest issues I would say is rust! Expect to see it and suffer it, if you can weld or know someone who can all the better. Sills inner and outer, rear wheel arches where seatbelts mount, boot floors around area of the wheel arch. Front inner wings, wheel arches and the front cross member that the radiator mounts to not the chassis member. All areas of rust but can be fixed. Don't worry about rusty wings near the wheel arch trim as its normal and not an mot fail if any sharp edges are covered.
If you are keeping it and want it to drive better and last, replace all the oils with correct spec oils too.
Once you get one, pay ya membership and have access to probably the biggest database of information about terranos in the world.

As Rick says, great tow cars with the manual having a higher weight limit than auto but even then an auto will tow a caravan. As Rick has done my old r reg towed a trailer with a t reg on it no problem at all.

In AWD vehicles I have owned a Mercedes 300TE 4-Matic, a Nissan Terrano r3mR, a Hyundai Santa Fe and now a Jeep all automatics.

The Nissan was the best of the bunch but I could not find a Nissan in our price range with low mileage so at short notice when our Hyunda was written off we had the Jeep.

Hi Solarman, thanks for your welcome! The capabilities of the Terrano are sounding better all the time! I had a go at banger racing with a friend for a while, a long time ago! We had a Fiat 131 Mirafiori estate but it didn't last long!! Great fun at the time though!

Wow! Thank you for your welcomes! As soon as I get my T2 I will definitely be paying my tenner, thanks Jims-Terrano, sounds like it'll definitely be more than worth it , I love the fact that there's no cambelt to worry about too! I did consider a Santa Fe for a while but I think I'd enjoy a higher driving position Macabethiel although It seems the Santa Fe does have alot of attributes, for towing a caravan it would have had to be the 2.7 v6 I think but I reckon I might have found my ideal in the T2! More than likely with a manual box me thinks, thank you folks!

Didn't manage to get any trophies Rick sadly! Just ended up with a pile of very twisted metal to take down to the weighbridge after a couple of meetings! :nenau.
The 3 litre T2 sounds like the preferable option what with the apparently slightly better economy and the little extra oomph but It doesn't look like my budget will stretch to what they are commanding price wise and there doesn't seem to be that many around, I may be able to scrape another couple of hundred nuggets as I've seen a couple of very clean looking 2.7 T2s for around the £1795 mark with sub 100k mileage (Long wheel base), might be worth the extra effort in the long run as I do intend to keep the T2 for a long time if it meets my expectations as i'm sure it will by all accounts! I'm impressed by everyones enthusiasm for the species on here! I didn't actually realise till recently the 2.7 is the same lump that's in the London Black cabs, that says a lot to me about their durability if well looked after.

Our Santa Fe was the V6 2.7 CDX petrol, very nippy and car like to drive but the fuel consumption was high in the winter it dropped below 20 mpg on local runs it peaked at 26-27 in the Summer to France with no towing! They have issues with oil leaks from the sump - its a liquid gasket. Steering rack leaks and of course the cam is driven by a rubber band. I felt that it's design life was set to expire when the 7 year warranty was gone e.g. rear silencer!

My wife and I used to be regular spectators at the Banger Racing & Oval Racing at Hednesford Raceway for many years. Not sure if the site is a Housing estate now ?

I hear what you're saying about mileage concerns! That doesn't bother me so much as long as it's been looked after mechanically and if I find a good one i'll be religiously changing oils and servicing etc, that's something I've always been strong on with all my vehicles in the past, look after it and it'll look after you has always been my motto! What concerns me the most is the dreaded tin worm! I'm getting a little concerned that in my price range there are going to be some rust issues so I'll just have to be extra careful which one I choose I think, been looking at your project thread and it frightened me just how extensive it can become if left unchecked .
A superb job by the way, you should be proud! I have had some experience of mig welding in the distant past but with a gasless type welder with some success but sometimes got the rice krispies syndrome with it spitting at me and hot metal sizzling away in my ear wax! :lol

Hey thank you Pete :thumb2 I've got alot to learn about Terranos but they seem to be cracking motors for the money! I've yet to purchase one but that should be resolved towards the end of the Month so for now i'm just bending everyones ears on here and researching! A good bunch they all are too! I'm really impressed with everyones' enthusiasm on here and i'm looking forward to getting my teeth into a T2, it's infectious, It's looking like I might have to purchase a mig welder just in case though! I have had a bit of experience with tin worm as we also have a 1987 MK1 Fiat Ducato motorhome on which we're constantly chasing the little blighters with an angle grinder and a tub of filler! I have a feeling we may be parting with her though and getting a caravan instead, see what happens, Thanks and good luck to you mate .

Hmmmm, might be an idea to get myself a small motorcycle for work in case I need to have the T2 in bits on the drive for any length of time, what with where we live and the nature of my job I need a reliable form of transport on constant stand by, public transport is not really an option, I've just been lucky so far with the Elantra being ultra reliable, it's been a good ol' bus really but I just feel like i'm sitting on the floor and I miss 4 wheel drive!

Hi,
Only mentioning as you have Hampshire as your location. This one has popped up on the isle of wight. It is a 3l auto and the MOT history shows advisories for slight corrosion on fuel and brake lines.
