Hi i have a 1997 maverick 2.7tdi it starts first flick it wont rev over 3000rpm it lacks power it puffs out white smoke and smells of diesel. i have put a new fuel filter housing front to rear fuel pipes dont no any help would be great thanks andy

what MAF do you have, Bosch or HItachi? check and clean if HItachi, not sure if you can clean the bosch.

remove mini filter from pump inlet banjo

then get a new maf

blank egr

Are you sure there isn't a leak sucking in air to the fuel system? I've heard of cheaper fuel filters not sealing correctly and causing similar issues to your's.

Jim

ah yes, check your fuel lines over rear axle too for corrosion

Hi thanks for the good replies i took the bango off the front of the pump but no mini filter. i will try a new filter again thanks

If you are trying another filter try another brand of filter just to be sure.

Jim

also, forgot to add, just unplug the MAF, see if it works any differently.

Double check that banjo - I initially thought mine didn't have one either, was amazed at how far done inside the pump it was.

I made a hook out of the wee reinforcing metal bar in an old wiper blade - perfect tool for the job. Had exactly the same symptoms, totally cured now.

Some of the trucks also have the filter inside the banjo bolt itself, not he pump so also worth a check there and as mentioned, check the fuel filter is sealing with the housing.

from what I remember the maverick 2.7tdi's don't have a mini filter.

Thanks for the replies I have got a maf coming tuesday. i took off the banjos and there was a filter inside the banjo so i removed that. then i took off the banjo for the return it to had a filter,spring,3 small washers & a ball bearing. i did not remove this filter just cleaned it well. it now revs to 4000rpm then it holds back and lots of unburnt diesel so getting there slowly.

Yes mate, thats the way, inlet banjo filter is not needed, main fuel filter is all any diesel engine in this country needs

have you been underneath and had a good look at the fuel lines in front of and over the rear axle ?

blank your egr as well mate, this made loads of difference to mine, best single thing I've done. Mine must have been sticking or something as it gave me about 10-20% more power and its that much smoother and responsive now

hi stinka i have changed the fuel lines from tank to filter and the return pipe with rubber hose. i might take the filter out of the banjo and the spring and ball bearing from the return side of the pump and leave that lot out and refit the banjo.

That spring and ball are the pressure relief for the pump and is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY for the operation of the pump. It regulates the pressure inside the pump to 13 pounds (if I remember correctly). If it is not there (or leaking) your truck will lack power, especially in higher revs, and will be harder to start (it will require more cranking.

Hi just changed the air flow sensor still no differance. it still only revs to 4000rpm then it starts missing and pumps out white smoke that smells diesel any help i need to tax it and use it cant wait to use it thanks andy.

Sounds to me like you have fly by wire pump, if so I would say pump is stuffed, white smoke is too far retarded, can only be controlled by pump, worth taking it into Nissan and for £65 they will put it on diagnostic computer if you have the repair done by them they will knock of the £65 that is my local anyway, but if the pump is stuffed it will be expensive, Rick

all sorted now i took it to dtm in bristol they had a look and found that the pressure relief valve in the pump was faulty. drives like a new truck now thanks for all the help guys.

Blimey, a garage with mechanics that seem to know what they are doing.

Glad you got it sorted. Now go get it MUDDY...
