Well got in the Jeep WJ this morning - tried to start her before the Glow Plug Lamp went out as I did not realise how cold it had been in the night - she started - then stalled immediately. It just did not want to start after even though I waited for the Glow Plug light to go out. Tried quite a few long cranks with no sign of it firing.

Used our other Jeep instead the on returning home it fired up straight away. If it had been a petrol engine I would have said it had flooded. Wonder if the engine had run backwards and emptied the fuel line if that a possibility.

Anyone here had similar issues with a diesel engined motor ?

That doesn’t sound good Ted, hope you get it sorted. Nothing like heater plugs is it?

A funny turn

On these MB based engines if the Glow Plugs Fault then after starting the little yellow coil lights stays illuminated for a considerable time. Went out tonight and she fired up instantly from cold.

It's a worry if the Gaffer is out and it fails to start - we do have breakdown cover away from our home - just inconvenient plus the wrath of Wendy to fear. lol

The wrath of the mrs is the worst bit :lol

Got to say Ted, personally I’d go for home start as well for peace of mind.

You are a mind reader Jim !

Home Start is something I discussed with the Gaffer this evening - I will see what the NFU wll charge - better check my Policy first as I might even have it if its standard !!

Noticed on wk the glow plug light is on for a much shorter time than was on any of the Nissans.

Before on the old trucks have turned ignition off and on again after glow plug light has gone out to give it more heat. Don't know if really made any difference.

On my WK2, I have the push button start, and it's strange, as it hardly gives the glowplugs anytime at all. Sometimes it even starts before all the dash lights have finished their self test.

There does not seem to be any way to wait until the glowplug light goes out, as all you do is put your foot on the brake, and then press the button, the car does the rest.

Wonder if this is like mine though on key. Once past stage 2 release key and it continues cranking til fires. But strange when been used to holding a key at after stage 2 cranking.

Our WK does that if you have not let the Glow Plug light extinguish long enough. The WJ is more old fashioned.

This morning she would not start again. As yesterday she fired and ran for about two seconds then stopped.

I am thinking it's either e sensor and/or connector now.

My Land Cruiser has the same setup, but it waits for the yellow coil light to go out before turning the engine over, first time it did it I thought there was a problem as I pushed the button and it took about 3 seconds before the engine cranked.

Kind regards

Russell.

No joy today !!

I tried to start the WJ again this evening and not a sign of firing but it cranks over very well. Am going to work my way around the various sensors and see if there is a dodgy connection somewhere. Have checked various fuses in fuse box all look good.

Tonight unplugged the connector to air mass sensor & sprayed the connector with WD 40 - put connector back in - nada. Packed up for tonight due to rain now am going to do some more research and try something else in the morning.

Wouldn't a dodgey sensor/connector throw the EML on:nenau
Probably best seeking advice on a Jeep forum.

As the engine is not running it has no chance to show an EML fault. Thinking of trying some Easy Start to get it to my garage - they can then plug it into the OBD port.

Not sure Easy Start will get it running but it might give it enough impetus to run for more than 2 seconds !

Jeep forums re nothing like as helpful as here.

Had the engine running today whoopeeeeee !!

So bought a can of Holts Easy Start - unclipped the air cleaner box shot a long blast up the inlet pipe. Lifted out the air filter and sprayed a bit extra. Clipped it all back in place. Cranked her over it ran for 5 seconds or so then stopped. Tried again and she fired and ran perfectly once warmed up.

At least I can now get it to the Garage next week without using the Homestart cover I just bought for a very modest £11.43 as an upgrade on my NFU policy.

Am thinking the issue is most likely going to be Glow Plug related - I might now keep her for another couple of years!!

Another Twist today !!

After I had dropped the Gaffer off at work I decided to start the Jeep WJ 2.7 CRD again with Easy Start to be sure I could get it to the Garage next Wednesday.

Tried without using spray - no firing at all - sprayed Easy Start inside Air Intake - started straight away. As the fuel tank was about a 1/3 full drove into the village and put £15.00 worth of Diesel in the tank & 250 ml of 2T oil.

Engine started just fine after visit to BP station so went home left it on driveway from 2.15pm until it was time to pick up the Gaffer from work. At 6.15 pm went out too start her, she fired instantly so used it for the local journey a round trip of about 3 miles.

That got me thinking so checked when I last changed the fuel filter - to my shame it was 45K miles ago in 2015/16!
Have ordered a new filter so will try that next as in the very short term the problem has gone away as a result of just £15.00 worth of fuel in the tank!! Might just be an intermittent issue so will see if she fires up in the morning.

Fuel filter might have done the trick !

Had the fuel filter changed today and it no longer pulls air visible in the translucent pipes in and out of the fuel pump - its a mechanical one on the front of the block.

Will not know for sure until it's stood overnight - garage did not charge me for fitting the filter - they said wait & see what the morning brings but they are optimistic as there are absolutely no air bubbles to be seen when idling. Before it was like a tornado of air in the fuel stream.

Starting issue fixed - great local garage service!!

She fired up first thing this morning - back to how she used to be. My fault for forgetting the fuel filter hadn't been changed for such a long time. I have done all the lubricants,ATF,Transfer Box, rear axle but the filter slipped through the net.

Best excuse I have come up with is that the particular filter is very expensive from Jeep, even after market ones are priced at over £50 so was not going to replace it every 20k miles as per service schedule.

It has an unusual number of connections including water in fuel switch, drain etc. Luckily MB used the same filter on some early commercial vehicles.

I had to order the part from Germany - took 5 days but old firm graciously gave me a decent discount so it was only £24.36. Was initially told by MB dealer that the part number did not exist. After giving them my original invoice number they somehow managed to find the part number after three different attempts.
