Guys this is driving me mad and I really don't want to stump up a silly amount of cash to buy a new linkage from Nissan.

I've brought 3 2nd hand linkages now and still not been able to make a good one out of them all. I've recently brought one from Mickey on the Facebook group and fitted it. It looked in great condition and has fixed the awful noise I was getting from the passengers side wiper due to the worn out plastic white part that the spindle goes through BUT, now the drivers side one appears to be just as bad and all I've managed to achieve is moving the noise closer to my side of the truck :doh

My question here really is to ask if anyone has successfully managed to swap another spindle onto the linkage without damaging the black plastic/rubber part that the ball joint pops into.

I've tried 3 now and damaged them all to the point where I can't re-attach a new spindle :doh

There has to be a tool or some easy way of doing this??? :bow

I warmed mine up with a heat gun and pressed it onto the ball to tighten it back up.
That was a quick fix about 3 years ago and it's just starting to slacken up now so will try this fix again.

Yerp, HEAT, but not to paint stripper levels, just hair temps :D
Ofcourse you could always rose joint the buggers :lol

Problem I've got is that the actual white plastic part has worn itself into a flat spot so when you grab on the metal splined spindle that the wiper arms attach to, you can move it up and down with at least 1cm of travel :doh

It's causing the wiper to "jump" across the windscreen rather than glide and sounds awful.

My question is how do I remove the old one, leaving the black plastic bit on the linkage in a good enough condition to be able to pop a new one back in :nenau

mine actually popped out of the white plastic part.
warmed it up until it started to go soft then kept working it and re warming it until it was a good fit.
covered it in grease an put it back together.

I tried something similar with some bits I got from Rick but I made a right old mess of it, I needed it for Mot so ordered a complete linkage from MJM 4x4 breakers in hull for £35, job done :thumb2

You've been luckier than me then, I'm on my 3rd one even though I was told all 3 were "good" :(

Wiper Linkages

You are right about the outrageous price of wiper linkages I had to replace one on my old Carlton some years back and it cost about £130 for the bits. They seem to have a build life of around 80k miles and then start being noisy and over wiping.

On the older Mercs with one large single wiper blade they have a strange cam action that allows the blade to wiper more of the screen. If you fit a Bosch after market wiper blade they hit the screen pillar. Fit exactly the same length genuine MB part and somehow they are silent. They look identical at a glance but the difference in terms of performance defies logic. Oh and the price reflects this, a Bosch one costs around a third of the price!

All Sorted

Why didn't anybody tell me to use a ball joint splitter :doh :nenau

Well that's what I did........ and it worked a treat.

Dropped it in the vice, ball joint splitter positioned and 1 short sharp whack with my Hickory lump hammer and the knackered one was off, the decent spare that I had then just popped back in and I didn't even need to bring any heat into the equation :naughty :naughty

Refitted back to the truck last night for a trial run and FINALLY I have silent wipers :splif

I've not resealed the inspection plates back on yet as I need to clean all of the fresh Tiger Seal off that I only applied last week :doh I tell you what though, it wasn't half bonded in good, so that's another plus point I guess, I've been recommended lots of adhesives in the past all of which have been crap but the original Tiger Seal is the real deal!!!!

Right what's my next job................ :doh

Sounds like a good result with the wiper links.

That Tiger Seal is good stuff I used it to bond a pair of large rubber horse box buffers to a slate floor outside a set of main doors to a restaurant. Two years later and they are still in place!

:thumb2 I hope people find this thread in the future when battling with the search engine :lol

No wonder the Tiger Seal was almost a fiver dearer than the sub standard junk next to it on the shelf, that's going to be my adhesive of choice in future :thumb2

I was told it is used to stick wings on some models of cars by Coach Builders. Shame it goes off so quick once opened.

Don't bother sealing the access panels mate, I did then realised there is two other big holes in between them anyway

I was under the impression that if you don't seal the passengers side one that you can get a leak into the passengers side footwell :nenau

Thats what I thought too, but with the other two gaping holes there I can't see how sealing them could stop it, Nissan put foam strips on the plates to seal them but like I say :nenau

I'm going to have another look tomorrow 'cos I'm starting to doubt myself now :doh:lol, will update :thumb2

I thought sealing that access plate stops water dripping directly onto the blower which then allows it to run round and find it's way into the cabin behind the glovey.
I could be talking a load of balls though cos it's been years since I done mine. But it cured it:nenau

I've used double the amount of Tiger Seal this time around too :sly

Had a quick look earlier, put my hand in one of the holes with no cover and can touch the linkage and the bulkhead, I'm still gonna run some sealant round the access panels just because Nissan did :nenau

That ns panel does need sealing, my old 05 plate had that leak amd over time if not repaired buggers the bearings in the blower which gives a horrible squeak when you go around corners.
