Winches - Advice needed.

I'm thinking about getting a winch for my Lwb T2.

Lots of winches out there, enough to cause confusion:nenau

Questions:-
What sort of power should I select, I'm thinking 12000lb.?
What sort of features are essential and what is just nice to have?
What the best and what's not?
Where's the best place to buy?

Any advice would be welcome.

10,000-12,000 is good, Many 12k winches will have a 10k motor in and just gear it further to achieve 12k. Making it slower.

Extra features which are nice is a wireless remote fob control.

If you can afford it try and get one with synthetic rope.

My cheap Chinese winch cost me about £140 with steel rope, But replaced the rope with synthetic rope as it's nicer to handle and re-spool. Still working well for light/medium winching. For the price it's an great winch and it's not let me down yet.

I was looking at that ebay item, seems to be about what I want.

£140 seems very cheap but if it does the job why not.

I must recommend Winch It very highly :thumbs
I've had two off him now and very very good service and equipment. my 1st one was the 12,000lb steel rope one and was about 240 quid. Came with two remotes too.
My new one is 13,000lb and dynema rope and it's ace, although a little slow. That doesn't worry me , I do have a heavy beast so rather the extra grunt than speed.
Comes with waterprioof solenoid too and that can be mounted remotely if needed. I did and it keeps everything out the muck longer :thumbs
Buy the highest capacity you can afford as when you're axle deep in the goo you need three times the trucks weight in winch capacity to get it out.
Steel cable is fine for the occasional use , just spray it regularly with loads of WD40 or similar.

I got a small 4 ton hand winch like this:- (hand winch but you only have about 8 foot of winching length, which means you then have to carry a load of strops to make up the length, and then have to keep adjusting it every few feet. The other thing is, is does not cope with being muddy very well, and soon became a bit dangerous as the locking mechanism would fail. Luckily, I was only using it to pull a tree stump when it did that. So even though I have it, I never take it with me any more.

I was wondering about fitting a couple of "receivers" to the front of the car and making the winch removable, only putting it on when you actually need it, which seems to be what a lot of the Americans do, the good thing is, you can then use it on the back as well. Still a long way off as a properly thought out idea yet though.:lol

Have you looked into special insurance, don't be put off. Usually it's the same price as normal insurance. Look at a tirfor winch, or you can use a farm jack (hi-lift jack) for winching.

ive come to the same conclusion regarding a removable winch, im going to make a new front bumper with a flat platform to mount it too, that way my insurance provider will be non the wiser, shhh lol
obviously il have to inform them of the bumper, but, as long as it looks the same(ish) as standard and doesnot enhance the performance or attractiveness to theft it shouldnt be an issue. thats what my bike insurers say about my carbon fibre fairing anyway!!!
