does anyone know for sure if a petrol rear axle and diff will fit and work on a 2.7tdi

im just putting pauls theory to test that they use the same parts where they can

i assume the gearing difference will be sorted in the gearbox before it gets to the rear diff

will save me loads if it does

please help

As far as I'm aware the diff ratios etc are the same across all models as are gearbox ratios, so they should be interchangable. If changing just one iff it woul be best to count the teeth on the crown wheel an pinions of the 2 diffs to ensure they are the same - you'd get reaful windup (even offroad) if not.

is it easy to do , to count them ?

any tips.... im lost on gearing to scared to open it encase it all falls out

Rea the manual as Zippy says but yu need to drop the propshaft, remove the half shafts and then of you undo the 9 (IIRC) nuts at the front face of the axle casing you will e able to remove the diff.

This is an ford english diff, but it is the same basic pattern so will give you and idea (pics nicked off ebay)

Count teeth on crownwheel - tip: use paint, tippex or something to mark where you start.

Count teeth on pinion gear

Divide crownwheel by pinion to give ratio, X:1

Colin....good counting tip; pull your thumb out of your arse and that makes 10. ;)

Ill sell you a colmplete axle with diff for 75 collected? thanks:sly

Don't need to strip the diff to look at the crown wheel:nenau

Just chalk a line on the input, and rear wheel / drum, and see how many revolutions are needed on the input (propshaft) to give one revolution of the wheel. That is your ratio.:clap
Since they are a limited slip diff, both wheels will turn together anyway.
Hope it helps..
Best regards, Rustic
