let me explain.

so with my K&N fitted, I have this right whistle when accelerating hard, and with the I/C nice and clean, everything appears to breath better. I notice now that when accelerating on turbo, then dropping off the pedal, I get a PFFT. yeah? like turbos do on Subarus etc...is that normal?
its not super loud, but i have the ears of a hawk, and its noticable to me...its like i have a dump valve fittedor somert??

to mean baked beans??

tiz normal.. your K&N the induction one??

mr loveglove has that on his with a k &n fitted its normal .

he will tell you exactly what it is very soon im sure

It's just the waste gate opening to depressurise the turbo off the throttle:thumbs

Recently fitted a K&N induction kit myself.
Don't you find that these extra noises put a smile on your face?
That's the most important thing! :)

Ian.

thanks all! I reckon the waste gate answer is the one i'm looking for, it makes sense, its just i never noticed it before...but then again i havent driven it nearly as much before now so....!!

yeah, I like the extra noises, sounds awesome! I dont have the induction K&N, just the direct replacement, cost about £30, well worth it because i think it actually does make a difference...car feels to breath so much better in that it runs so much smoother.

whats the difference between the induction wotsit and the replacement wotsit ..... and can i have one ? :naughty

the induction will require an extended air pipe i think, to put it closer to fresh air so perhaps closer to the arch or lower engine bay. The filter on the end will be exposed too, so you have to watch out for water. The filter itself is different too, is causes a cyclone of air to be force through into the engine, apparently its that cyclonic motion that really gives the engine some grunt. thats how it works on my other cars anyway...!

The direct replacement is just that, a conical filter BUT the material used is different plus mesh coated and allows much more air through and is much cheaper.

not sure if you can get them for yours, need to check!

If you want to get racey put a blow off valve on :lol

Imagine at the lights on take off .....barooooooooommmmmm Wooosh not pfft :lol :lol

enough already with the air cyclone or the hicloners will come out of the woodwork!

Its just the extra airflow thats giving the benefit....remember after the air goes through the filter its seperated through the channels of the intercooler and then has to navigate the inlet manifold....if you think theres still any 'cyclonic' motion after that lot then dream on!:lol I won't bore you with the science but cyclonic motion is a proven benefit on old-fashioned petrol engines with carbs, because even the best ones still had neat fuel running along the inlet manifold walls (widely tested at Harwell Labs in the 60s/70s)....the swirling airflow induced by hiclone-type devices kept the fuel mist in air suspension for longer so improved the burn and fuel economy. But on fuel-injected engines, especially with intercooler pipework in the way, there is zero scientific evidence to support their use.

But biggest benefit od the K&N should be a 2-3mpg improvement in fuel economy....i'd be interested when you've done a fuel check to see if you are getting that?

BRIGGIE the two types are a direct replacement filter (about £30) that goes into the existing airbox and the induction kit (£55-ish) that replaces the airbox.....with the latter you probably need to advise insurance because of its visibility.
