Was cruising back home this morning in my 1995 2.7 TD LWB Terrano when I started to notice it seemed to be 'missing' a bit. As I went on further, the power fell away to the point I could just about crawl back home. From the problem starting to full flow happened within 2 miles.

It was OK at idle and a little bit beyond, but putting your foot down created a lot of whiteish smoke and no power. It was barely driveable - I could get it to about 1200 RPM and managed to get it to 5th using just a tiny bit of throttle, and gently brought her home. Revving at a standstill gave lumpy running, smoke, and not a lot of revs.

Ironically, once it had been standing for a while, I moved it and it seemed to have regained at least some of its power and could rev a bit and even get up a small incline, though I was only moving it round a yard so did not go for any distance or speed, but it certainly felt better for standing. I guess if I went out any distance it would revert back again.

I previously suffered from a dirty micro / banjo filter and cleaned it a few thousand miles back. On the weekend I changed two of the pre heaters which had failed and having suffered lumpy cold starting for the last month or so, it had been starting perfectly.

The fuel filter is probably around 5000 miles or so. The fuel lines were replaced around the same time. The air filter probably needs replacing now though I do clean it regularly with an air line.

Having read around, there are a multitude of potential problems and I was wondering if someone could give me a list of the most likely things to check.

From what I can see I should start to look at the following :

Micro filter
Fuel filter (and corrosion/blockage in the body)
Sticky waste gate (hopefully haven't lost the turbo entirely)
Problems with the springs in the injector pump ?
Sensors ?

This engine does not have a MAF (spent ages looking for the damn thing before I realised it wasn't fitted to this model !)

Any other suggestions gratefully appreciated.

the banjo filter is the mini filter.
have a look at my post about overflow valve, cured my problems and that of at least one other member.
it is in the banjo of the return pipe, at back of pump.
not 100% it is your issue, but a cheep fix if it is.

yep, does sound like the mini filter, micros filter, or whatever you wanna call it, Badger has listed its location, that would be my first thing to check..!

Hi,
Water in the diesel can cause what looks like white smoke but I think it is steam. Happened to me once with a range rover.

Sounds very simular to what i have just had with mine.Mine was the diesel filter housing, get somebody to sit in the drivers seat rev it up and when it gets lumpy and smokey pump the primer button on top of the diesel filter housing,if it revs better and no smoke while your priming then you may have found the fault, beware the filter housing i could only get from Nissan, hope this helps,

Thanks for all the replies good people. Much appreciated. Thought at first it might have been the turbo :(

I will check both the fuel filter, housing and the micro filter first and see what we can eliminate. Sounds like the culprit is amongst that lot first.

The best bit is trying to explain it all in Spanish ;)

Discovered yesterday that a spring is 'muelle'. So what will todays new word be I wonder ?!

Keep you posted on developments. Gutted. Love my truck :) And round here, it's brilliant. Just going out with the trailer to get wood is a good off road experience !

where in Spain are you John?

Is it the no.1 injector as this sounds exactly like the problems I had; is the engine making a different sound 'clacking'?

Bah ??? Not so many sheep round here. Mainly Oranges, olives & carob :)

See your second place in France is not a million miles away :)

Finally got some news - I discovered that (and depending on who you believe, local gossip being what it is) the local petrol station had a dodgy load of diesel delivered - either dirty fuel or some say it may have been BioDiesel.

Not sure exactly what, but suffice to say I think the filters & lines are probably in a mess. Having the tank drained, lines cleaned, new filters etc whilst I'm back in the UK this week end will see what happens when I'm back on Saturday.

Unsurprisingly, the petrol station has received a lot of pretty large bills ! One more will be whinging their way soon. Just hope the pump is OK.

there isn't a sensor in the number one injector on a TDi model, i think it's only on TDI's

white smokey ect

just to remind everyone.
BE CARFUL THAT YOU DONT CROSS THREAD THE BANJO BOLT.
As one member did a few years ago and had a night mare trying to get it helicoiled.:doh

Well, as a follow up, after much ado it appears that it was down to dodgy fuel supplied by the local garage.

We are not sure if it was 100% biodiesel or something else but having cleaned the tank, lines, changed filters & cleaned the banjo filter all seems well.

The garage admitted liability and paid for the repairs. I wasn't the only one and, from the sounds of things, my bill was small compared to some !

Result...........Great stuff..............:thumb2

I was happy, and relieved, that's for sure !

As long as it didn't do any long term damage to the pump :)

I'm not sure what type is fitted, whether a Bosch or Lucas, but it looks like the Bosch pumps can handle Bio diesel fine and the Lucas can't. My guess is it was BioDiesel and a Lucas pump..... I'll check it out.

Just keep my fingers crossed now !

Hi Reetp. I also spend quite a bit of time in Spain (about 6 months of the year), about 25kms east of Malaga, a little town called Coin. I leave my Terrano there all the time (my daughter uses it when I'm not there, she prefers it to her Mitsubishi Montero). Also like you I struggle to communicate with the local garage - although my daughter speaks good Spanish it's the technical terms that cause the problems, how do you explain things like valve clearances, shock absorbers and emissions to someone who speaks no English (you don't find these technical terms in a Spanish dictionary). I've recently put my T2 onto Spanish plates and to do this the car has to have an ITV, well, it failed that and the only way I was able to explain to the garage what had to be done was to show them the fail certificate, even though I had no idea what it had failed on (all in Spanish) so I was ripe to be ripped off, so to be fair to the garage they were pretty good - four new shock absorbers and the injectors cleaned - 530€, probably would have cost me about the same in England, plus it passed on the retest - I really will have to start Spanish lessons!!!

Hi !

We have lived here permanently for 3 1/2 years now. Little village called Pedralba, near Valencia.

I've worked hard on my Spanish but the little grey cells aren't what they used to be ! I spent a lot of time in bars round here. It's the only way to get known, and once you are known you won't get ripped off. Because you know them as well !

I'm fortunate that I now have some good Spanish friends who also can speak a little English, and they have then introduced me to the entire family. Once you are in, life is much easier.

Yes, techie terms are difficult, but the guy I go to is brilliant (we actually have several garages here) and though speaking no English he is incredibly patient and we rummage through cars pointing at bits and swapping words. All they care about is that I TRY to speak Spanish, not how good it is. They'll forgive a million sins as long you have made an effort.

I really enjoy going down there and yacking for ages. My wife isn't quite so keen - I still have a job to do !

It's a challenge, but has been great fun, and very rewarding. And the cars are still running :)

Be interested to know how you got your matriculation done - I'm trying to do mine myself and first of all I need a technical report in Spanish from Nissan, but my Spanish friend in Valencia who has a Nissan dealership, amongst other things, is having a struggle to get anything !

Like to hear your experiences.
