Hi everybody. My Terrano, 1998, 2.7TDI has started emitting whiteish coloured exhaust smoke. This is normally at its worst when I leave it ticking over for a few minutes and then rev the engine. It has also developed an engine mis-fire.:nenau:nenau:nenau When i'm driving it I cannot see any exhaust smoke and cannot notice the mis-fire. Would a fuel additive help and if so which is the best. Regards Wadey.

Have you had it serviced recently? could be a duff fuel filter that hasnt sealed properly and letting in air.

Jim

White smoke usually air getting into the fuel lines either via the fuel filter as mentioned earlier or the fuel line from the tank has a small perforation.

Does it still do it after it has warmed up on tick over?
if not, it could be the glow plugs. They make starting difficult and lumpy while cold if one has gone, and even more lumpy if 2 have gone.

If 4 ever go, I hope you have a good battery.....takes ages to start.

Change the filter and use a decent quality one, making sure you use the new sealing washers and that they are located properly on the head.

Also check the rubber hoses and clips under bonnet.

If it continues, then its time to start looking at the steel pipes on chassis.

Im a new member, have spent about 2 hours looking through as many posts as i can! just about every fault ive had is on here. just took me alot longer finding!!! best £10 i have ever spent!

Mine had this white smoke and slight misfire problem, turned out to be the steel diesel pipes than ran towards the raer of the car, i replaced with rubber fuel line.

Hi. Many thanks for the advice regarding white smoke and mis-fire. I'll be changing fuel filter and hope it cures it. All the very best to everyone.
