My 3.0 Patrol has developed a low pitched whistle only happens between 1500-2000 rpm and once warmed up, assuming turbo problem as defiantly linked to the throttle.

Any ideas much appreciated.

Russell.

worth having a good look around the hoses, my Mrs motor had similar, turned out to be a not fully tightened clip, Rick

Possibly a hose starting to leak?
Can you identify where noise is coming from, is it back of car at exhaust, or engine bay?

If it's coming from the exhaust it could be the internals starting to fatigue. Baffle failing or something. I don't think it would be the turbo itself. I would hope not anyway.

I'm with Rick, I had a noise linked to the throttle when I got mine and turned out to be a loose jubilee clip on one of the intercooler pipes.

PS. I will find out the postage for those hub caps soon - the box is sitting in my room starting at me! :doh

Got me Baffeld....

I'm "exhausted" writing this again, but have you recently changed your front exhaust down pipe?

But I got a whistle when under load, when Kwickfit changed my exhaust, it wasn't there before. They only had my word for that.
I guess the line of... I've had this vehicle nearly 20 years and it has never done that before really helped :doh...lol:lol
They removed the front pipe, resealed it... still there.:augie
I said change it for another brand... they did... problem solved.:bow
Now you wouldn't get that service at most main exhaust fitters, so again to name and praise, it was Kwickfit at Brownhills, West Midlands.:clap:clap
PS I have no connection with them, no family or friends work there, they were just a great team of hard working guys, at one point there were three fitters working on it. I just paid the quoted price, I guess I could have tried for "compo" but we had a good working relationship, and they stayed with it till it was sorted.... and so did I, I watched every bolt removed lol...:thumb2

Does yours whistle whilst revving whilst parked? if so I doubt Turbo whistle.
You do need turbo boost ie under load to hear it.

Many years ago I fitted a tubo boost gauge, and after fitting, that acted as a loud speaker, and you could hear the turbo whistle through that, so I put a clamp over the rubber hose under the bonnet, to reduce the air flow... problem solved. It didn't seem to slow the response time down much either.

Exhaust not been changed just started to do it, only does it under load ie when driving not when reving in neutral. Tommrow I am going to take the cover off the intercooler and have a look around.
Thanks for the advice.

Kind regards

Russell.

well took the cover off and tightened all the pipe clips made no difference still has a quiet whistle. do not know where to look next.

Kind regards

Russell.

Seems this may have gone away, may not have been the turbo after all. Came out the other morning and car would not start, no battery power. Connected it to the works Transit, took a lot to start it when I turned the key in mine the Transit fan belt started screeching! Got it going and drove straight to Halfords to put a new battery on it, car really not happy diff lock, anti lock brake and stability lights all flashing on and off, all needles traveling continually backwards and forwards, window wont close till doing 30mph and a smell of burning. put new battery on and it started perfect all lights and needles correct except rev counter off the scale and trying to do a second lap. the burning smell was the alternator and a meter confirmed it was not charging so round to garage to get new belt and alternator fitted. all solved even the rev counter if this ever happens to you all you have to do is red line it and it fixes itself.a few days after this I suddenly noticed that I can not hear this whistling noise anymore no matter what I do so am now wondering if it was a whining bearing in the alternator.

Russell.
