Hi, i am new to the site, have'nt got a nissan yet, fancied a x trail deisel dci for towing my 2 berth caravan 1275kgs, but heard a few reports of turbo problems, also just been looking on autotrader and there seems to be alot of terranos for sale that look nice as well, need advice from people who drive them,

sheila had a 51 plate x trail sport dci turbo ( company car ) it went like the proverbial brown sticky smelly stuff off a shovel ( 6 speed manual gearbox ) , but ..... and its a big but .... it spent a lot of time in the garage .... it had the cat replaced ( it had collapsed ) . price ? .... £900 thankyou very much from nissan ( the company paid )

good points where ( and there wasnt many ) .... it averaged 47mpg on the motorway , went like a rocket , was comfy and had a excellent stereo

I would personally go for the Terrano II (which I did in December lol). Its just a proper beefy looking and sounding 4x4 that is very well priced and if you get one somewhere around an R reg or similar then the tax isnt exactly "taxing" either, see what I did there...

£112 for 6 months for my R reg.

Just went through its MOT and passed first time.

Just a good all round good car mate and very capable offroad and for towing.

Just be aware of fuel consumption. Real world, the 2.7Tdi will be doing 25mpg, less when towing...if you can find a 3.0 litre for the right money (and you should compared to an XTrail) they will do around 32mpg with another 25 horses or so....:thumb2

That caravan is very light!!!

Official Figures for Terrano MPG = 31.2 combined (not towing)
Official Figures for X Trail MPG = 39.2 combined (not towing)

Do you only want the Terrano / a 4x4 as a tow-car??? :nenau

Vauxhall Astra 1.9cdti would pull that caravan at 85%.... offical MPG combined = 58.9mpg (not towing)... so basically twice the Terrano, or half as cheap to run all year round!!!

However.... if you can live with the fuel costs...

I love my Terrano, if you wana know if they are a good tow car have a look on any caravan rally at how many there are! :thumb2
Simple and cheap to service
Cheap to buy
Not alot to go wrong if you look after them
Will tow pracically ANY caravan if you ever want to get a bigger one
You'll never get stuck on a field... and have fun towing others off!!!
No worries about touring all year round
... oh, and you get to join on here too!!!! :lol

Of course as we know 'official' = 'we made it up'. On the basis that real-world combined on the T2 is actually more like 25-26mpg I assume the XTrail is not as good as is made out to be either?

and you get the cheaper road tax as already mentioned on pretty late T2's up to around 2005 early 2006, but check the DVLA site to be sure :thumb2

My first caravan was an old 1980's 5 birth Compass Echo... think it weighed in at about 900kg all up!!!

Rather then reverse it (it was tiny) I would just unhitch it and push / spin it round on my own!!! Never needed to jockey wheel to lift it onto the tow bar either!!! :lol :lol

This one is a 'classic' around 1981, it has plastic windows and carver heating, to be fair pretty much all the important bits a new caravan has.

it's an odd equation the smaller they are, the harder they are to reverse :nenau on the other end of the scale i also have one that weighs in at 2.6 tonnes unladed.

Real world MPG figures are ALOT worse than the xtrail i have the non intercooled job i think the newer ones with intercoolers etc and the 3.0 will be better on the juice but hey you get a lot of car for your money and no matter what the weather is you will not be stopped reliability is pretty damn good to boot,just get it bought :thumb2
