I've worked in various old ICI Divisions, Speciality Chemicals, Silicones Petrochemicals & Plastics, Acids, Nylon and Acrylics.
One major problem now that was never appartent in the ICI days, as all businesses were linked to each other, one might not be doing so well but it supplied another few that were making a mint.
If an ICI plant needed X chemical and ICI made it, it had to be purchased from within, so it kept things ticking over nicely in hard times, even paint had to be dulux
Separate all that and the brown stuff hits the fan big style:doh
When new technology was developed for an existing product, the new plant was always 1st built in the UK
The companies that now own the plants always retreat to their own countries when times are hard, easier to shut down the out posts in the UK:doh or build a new plant in China or Singapore as there all doing now. Pay the locals 30 bob a week and don't give a monkies about polution
