Hi guys and gals.

Im a drystone dyker living in Edinburgh, now I have just gained a few contracts on estates and im in need of a 4x4. Ive looked and looked and narrowed it to a terrano 2 the 2.7td 7 seater. Or an older nissan patrol.

The backs seats will be getting removed and a flat floor and a steel bulkhead installed behind the front seats.

Which would you guys prefer? I travel up north a lot up to ulapool for an ongoing job so mpg is a factor.

Welcome buddy :thumb2 I'm you're friendly club moderator, any problems give me a shout.

Firstly, you are my hero!!! I'd love to do that for a living with the rain in my beard :thumbs Instead I'm stuck indoors fixing PC's :bow

Deffo go for a Terrano mate, parts are plentiful and they are reasonably cheap, bulletproof engines if you get the 2.7 although there is the choice of a 3.0 litre and a 2.4 Petrol.

The 2.7TDi is the majority favourite due to it's indestructibility due to chain/gear driven engines and will alos run on Vegetable Oil, 30MPG tops though but you'll save a fair whack on fuel if you go to the cash and carry :naughty

I presume you want the LWB to load you're stones into the back? If that's the case then the LWB will be the way forward for you I think :thumb2

I've got a SWB Commercial Terrano, link to my project thread in my signature.

Welcome to the forum :)

I would get a 2.7 terrano. Some really good deals out there, Parts are easy to get and pretty good prices.

Hello bloke!

Don't discount the 3.0di, the very early ones had problems but the later ones are just as reliable as the 2.7. The 3.0 is a bit more economical, and about 20% more powerful than the 2.7.

Both vehicles are easy to work on and fix, so you can't go too far wrong. Just avoid any rusty ones.

:thumbs

Hi guys, that sounds great, the lwb terrano it is, theres a few nearish to me so ill go give them a test drive, what sort of weight can these tow? Can the 3.0 take more?

Morning and welcome aboard. I'd have either of the two diesels. Terranos tend to be narrower so gates on those country tracks are not an issue but patrols still seem to manage to get through the tracks too. Defo less mpg with a trol but nice motors just the same.
Things to watch for are rust mainly but that said not a deal breaker if you can weld or my case my son is far better welder than me. As for mechanical yes they have their niggles but to be honest there probably isn't much that we haven't come across here and often cheap fixes too.
If you go for paid membership there's a great download section with how too guides as well as discount from milners 4x4 for bits.

Good luck with your quest to find one.

I'd love to recommend a Patrol but sadly they are few and far between while maintaining very high prices
Mind you if a gate were too narrow the patrol wouldn't notice and you'd have some extra work to fix the larger hole :augie
So if you did find a patrol it could be a win win :D
T2 it is then :freak3:

Welcome.
Sounds to me like you could be towing some hefty weight so I would avoid an auto as they can only tow 2tn but do so very well in my opinion. The 2.7 can tow 2.8tn. The 3ltr can manage 3tn. Manual gearbox. According to Parkers.
Rust issues are top of the list when looking to buy.
Good luck and upload photos asap. We all love photos. [emoji106]

Welcome bud :thumbs

I've got a Trol myself and love it but a Terrano will be more economical. You'll also be lucky to find many Trols locally as well, lot more Terranos about :nenau

what a welcome!

Cheers for all the great info guys.will join up for sure as you all seem great, what a difference from mercedes forums haha.

banshee In this weather I envy your indoor job.

I think terrano 2 it is, i do like the sound of the 3lt but such similar towing weights that wont matter.

I do really like the all black interior in the 04/05 models and the blacked out headlights so im on the hunt for one of those, and the green color looks pretty good with some black wheels at 32 AT tyres.

One question did the swb commercial ever come with a bulkhead? As ideally I would like to fit one along with window mesh for safety as I live in a city.

Also what roof racks do you recommend as I use a rhino pipe tube to hold my walling pins.

Cheers again lads.

Do you guys ever meet up for greenlaning or offroading?

i am in the patrol camp myself and have been for years, however I think you've made the right decision although there is a 4.2 diesel long wheelbase y60 patrol on ebay at 4k and looks good....

whatever you look at the first and last word you need is RUST, RUST and RUST, sills, wings and anywhere inbetween. I have been to look at a very very tidy one owner terrano just recently it was lovely on the inside and the outside but underneath it was shocking and I mean shocking, both sills needed replacing as they were unrepairable this had also lead to body mounts needing work...the floors had also gone quite bad and radiator was lose because the front xmember had rotted out...
That is just worse case scenario and something to look for, there are good ones out there, a friend has just bought a perfect swb commercial in green which is lovely he paid £1800 for it...

Hi and welcome, if you get a Terrano ll I got loads spares pre 98, Rick

It doesn't unfortunately mate but the guards can be picked up relatively cheap and come up now and again on eBay, what's harder to find is the genuine Terrano polystyrene load levellers and rubber floor mats but I have 2 spare lucky for you :naughty If you need them they are yours :)

As for window mesh, there doesn't seem to be anything off the shelf for the Terrano, last one I saw was a white one in the rear of a Red SWB Commercial that belonged to the Isle of Man Electricity board, I went to the efforts of phoning them and asking for their vehicle maintenance guys and it turns out that they had hit a brick wall finding an application for the Terrano too so they'd made their own and welded them in :doh

I'm speaking with a guy in Derby at the moment though who thinks that he may be able to fabricate me something for £30 a unit so hang fire, I want mine first :lol

If you get a SWB, the LWB roof bars can be fitted with a tiny bit of chopping from the angle grinder, allowing the whole length of the roof to be utilised, I did this on my old SWB Maverick but haven't got round to doing it on my Terrano yet, so many wants...................

Do you guys ever meet up for greenlaning or offroading?

We sure do bud, I've been down south 3 times this year for laning weekends with the guys :thumbs

Not so many places to offroad in Scotland, I'm a member of a site at Bridge of Earn but apart from a similar site at Glasgow (I think) that's about it :nenau

found one...

http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/2004-54-NISSAN-TERRANO-II-2-7-TDi-SE-/272041900584?nav=WATCHING_ACTIVE

going to pick this up monday afternoon so longs as its not a rust bucket. Its a bit expensive but the green color is great and it has all black interior so im sold. Fsh helps too.

Banshee. Ill take those foam levels that sounds ideal, how much are you looking for them?
The terranos near bacup ( I know what a funny name eh) so could maybe just come pick them up if not to far?

Im going to get a full rhino roof rack and tube carrier setup as its pretty cheap and I plan on keeping this.

Barrbeast- let me know when your going off roading next as im up for that.

Now whos best for insurance and what tyres do you guys recommend?

Im thinking yokohama geolander ATs? Or worth getting others?
