SAT NAV ? WHAT FOR

Dont need satnav here - look at your maps 8O only 1 half decent road to here !!! (A9)
ALSO when I started driving Coaches years ago my Grandad told me before I went on my first longish trip and asked for a map" that If I got lost follow the sun to the coast and turn left or right and keep going and as long as I kept the sea on that side I would get home eventually as we live on the coast!!"
who needs sat nav its for WIMPS I say

ern1e you would be ok with sat nav mate, it helps spell the town names as you enter it

sat nav take 2

hi all,

thanks to everyone who took part in the survey.

special thanks to cameraman who showed me how his Tomtom Go 500
works and then went one step further by lending it me to trial this
weekend. Both Alison and myself are sold on this design, its beats the
Navman 520 a friend loaned me and we will therefore be investing in
a TT product soon.

Also may I add a futher big thankyou to cameraman again for helping
me to fit my Hella high leve brake light and advice on CB installation yesterday at his place.

Goes to prove what a friendly club this really is!

tomtom one on board

hi all,

gone and done it, yep, bought a tomtom one and pleased with it too!

was toying with the go 700, which is available now for about 329 if your religion allows you to enter dixons group stores. thought the remote control, hard drive of europe and blue tooth hands free for mobile spot on.

common sense won thru though and went for more simple approach of the One, reckon less to go wrong using sd memory cards than a hdd. also can live without hands free. can always add euro maps later and more importantly features later spec gps receiver which claims to not need an external aerial but cheaper if does? doesnt 'lose' sats as much either.

so 239 less well off, mind bargained a 3 year extend warranty for 50 quid.
oh and staff discount too so, so far so good. goona see which way it takes me to clumber meet, its like have another form of ICE.

This subject makes me larf for a number of reasons. Each to their own, but...

(1) I larf when I drive down the M6 in the dark and see all these little glows from people with their SatNavs on the dashboard - not o show them where to go next on a 200-mile motorway trip (????) but to say "look I've got a SatNav".

(2) Push a button on your mobile or drink from your water bottle and you'll get nicked for DD, but you can fanny about with this squitty little thing to your hearts delight and kill anyone you like....

(3) Anyone who needs a SatNav in the UK ought to take a bus or a taxi frankly. Or wear Clarkes Wayfarers like I do.

(4) There is some merit in using it in mainland Europe, but having driven there extensively, I'd say a few minutes with a road atlas (£6.99), marking the key waypoints clearly on a piece of card, will get you anywhere you like.

Save your money for fuel I say......

Whilst I agree in general with the comment, maps are easier kept up to date, satnav can be useful for finding an address in a strange town or city.

In Europe the same applies, useful on occasion I think.

I have plenty of usefull occasions in my job. Over the last 3 months mine has been a god sent and I would n't be without it. Not perminantly switched on and sits out of the way in the boot charging ready for when it's needed.
As for updating, don't have to go to the shops and pay for parking. All I do is plug it in to the pc and a few clicks of the mouse and it's done. Usually know somebody that has updates for free as well.

PS We all have our opinion and that happens to be mine

I've also had occassions to be glad I have mine.

Went to Spain last year, ferry to Santander with Caravan. Never been to Santander before so did not know what roads were like when we got there.

BTW mine has got street level maps of Europe and I'm glad it does. Straight off the ferry and it guided me out of Santander no problem what so ever. If I did not have it I would have got lost some were fell out with the wife and it would have been a great holiday.

I also like it for going to strange towns and cities in the UK. I've no problems with Maps/Atlas reading, but they do not go down to street level.

Yes you can stop at a garage and buy a local A to Z, get lost or ask someone where to go.

So each to there own, they have their uses, and they are mostly not just for saying, look I've got SatNav when driving up and down the M6, but I'm quite sure some people do :p

:p

if i said i had a satnav to my friends i would be laughed at, it is very hard to get lost in this country, i do understand it uses for the mainland but not here. :D

Oh go on Tans, where are ya then if not on the mainland?????

http://www.garmin.com/products/etrexLegend/ this link for the US model but you can get a UK version.

I have had one of these for a couple of years now. Not as sophisticated as dedicated car types but much more portable. I can use this while walking or mountain biking and even for finding where I have parked my car in the middle of Granada! It has a find your way back facility and all main roads of Europe pre loaded with 8mb of memory for loading more stuff.

Garmin Nuvi with City Navigator Europe - been using it for close on five years, paid a one-off payment of £99 three years ago, gives me lifetime updates (four per year) for the whole of Europe, it's the dogs!

tomtom go + samsung galaxy s2, galaxy better but needs net to work so eats your usage , tomtom 12months old died got them to send new one with new maps :clap

Garmin iQue, a Palm PDA with sat nav bolted on, had it for years never let me down It does however like to take me down narrow roads:doh
