Anyone tell me what this item I'm pointing to in the photo is?
image1.jpg

And anyone know why it would be disconnected at the bottom (and tied open or closed with a cable tie where it enters the engine casing under the intercooler rad).

It's the "throttle body control valve actuator". Page EC-304 of the workshop manual.

Page EC-431 describes it's operation. It forms part of the EGR system. The throttle butterfly is normally open but it is closed when the engine is up to temperature and is on low load. This creates a vacuum and pulls more gases through the EGR system.

Any idea why it would be disconnected and is it better to leave it disconnected or connect it back up?

Do away with it will be my answer, sucking in exhaust gasses to the inlet manifold may well be good for emissions but is defo not good for your engine, the other design of the throttle body flap was to stop engine shake on shut down, again tottaly useless, Rick

Leave it disconnected.
You need 14. 4 gigawatts from the flux capacitor to get it to work properly :lol
