If you chaps (and chapetts :augie) remember, I recently said there was a squeak in 4wd

I stripped down a hub all the way and removed wheel bearing to find out they were not serviceable hubs (due to the type I had)

As it happens today I noticed the noise happening in 2 wheel drive aswell.

Yesterday we got stuck in a deep muddy rut and I had to engage 4wd, she was squeaking like a goodun, but also noticed it in 2 wheel drive today all be it, quieter than when in 4wd... :nenau

I am confused.. :nenau noise in 4wd noisy squeak, noise in 2wd squeak less noisy..?

Told you back then you didn't have auto hubs so nothing to fix:doh I would have a good look at the front prop UJ's & maybe even remove the prop to see if the noise go's away if it does then the UJ's need replacing which isn't a big job maybe 1/2 hour to do both:augie

Noobie question alert again, do the front UJs turn in 2wd as I don't have auto hubs? They are always turning correct?

They turn all the time best check them for play i bought one where the propshaft broke in half and smashed a hole in the transfer box

Yes front prop turns all the time due to having fixed hubs, it'll take you 5 mins to get the prop off so worth doing to find out if the noise go's:thumbs had to do it on my old disco luckily mine had the spigot on the transfer box so could manually lock the centre diff (most disco 2's don't have diff lock or the spigot) & could run it as 2WD which was fun having a V8 lump under the bonnet:lol noise & vibration went straight away so knew it was the UJ's so replaced all 3 on the front prop & the double UJ was fun to do:doh

The only difference Alex between 2 and 4 is that in 2 all will be turning but no load in 4 there will be load so likely the noise will be worse, Rick

Yes spot on, it made a pretty bad noise last night getting out of that mud, right before I backed into a tree :doh

The lane was so narrow, with a ditch on one side and the rut was deep and muddy with no space to turn around :doh so I had to gas it hard... Steering did nothing... :p

Back to this noise, driving today in Tarmac slow speed I could hear a revolutionary squeaking, quite mild. How much are these bad boys? Can someone link me?

2 sets of these mate, remove the front prop first though to test it otherwise you might just be pi**ing into the wind

Is this the thread you make yonks ago and had a mare of a time replacing?

I don't think I will attempt, I will buy the bits when I can, and Save up for a trip to Ricks

Yeah but that's because I'd never attempted a set before, 2nd time round it was like riding a bike :thumbs

If the UJ's are shot & you don't replace them straight away the UJ's can break & your front prop will spin around cutting holes in your floor, your legs or the transfer box:doh take the front prop off to see if the noise go's if it does leave it off until the UJ's have been replaced:augie

I wouldn't have the first idea :nenau

What taking the prop off ? just a couple of nuts & bolts either end of the front prop:augie noise could be something else but prop need to come off to rule it out or confirm it's at fault, as I said if it is the prop & it lets go you could end up scrapping your truck due to damage it could do. Once it's off & lets say the noise go's i'm sure one of the mechanic's at your place would change the UJ's for you if you hand them the prop & new parts as they'll be able to do it quickly as it's already off the truck:thumbs

Stop worrying Alex we had your motor on the hoist last time you was here and I identified a dry UJ trouble is cannot remember if it was front or rear, but it was minor and not likely to go bad that quickly, problem is with your motor they do not have greasers:doh:doh, Rick

You spotted minor play in the rear on the shaft if I remember right :thumb2

I have just ordered two, then I saw mil era list...
Seems there are different year variants :doh

I have emailed them with my model year :doh

that means you will get the same non greasers that you have now, I would order pre 98 UJ's, which will have greasers, Rick
