I've recently bought a '98 Terrano 2 TDi LWB and, as all good new owners should do, have been reading the owners handbook.
All was well until I got to the Specification pages, then I got confused, not hard
Two gearboxes, FS5W71C and FE5R30A and two rear axles, H233 and C200, are shown.
How can I identify which I have and what's the difference?
Thanks
Peter

Welcome aboard Peter. Why do you need to know the gearbox types?

Keep It Simple, all you need to really know is that the rear diff is a Limited Slip diff. If you don't know for sure it's history then replace the rear diff oil with proper LSD Oil not gear oil with additive as often happens. Basically wrong oil or old oil in the rear diff and it'll get very twitchy at the back end. Other than that keep engine oil changed and make sure the 4wd is working before we have snow. Often the front Auto Locking Free Wheeling Hub's stick and break through lack of use. Check the 100's of threads on those. They are fine if looked after like everything else.

you might need to check the plate in the engine bay and find out from the serials on there....it may be one of the codes you have is for SWB, the other for LWB...

I'm just curious really, I always like to know what what because I know, at some point, I will try and order brake shoes or bearings or what have you and the first question will be "is it a H233 or a C200?" and I will feel a fool again :nenau

I've had a look at the VIN plate and tried to decode it but all the references I can find don't match what I've got.

Checked the auto hubs and they seem to be working and I'm off to the factors for some Comma LSD GL5 in the morning.

Torsion bars need a tweak as well, about 3" too low on the front.

There's hours and hours of happy tinkering to come, lets hope it doesn't get too cold, wet and miserable for me to enjoy it.

Bear in mind there are two rear diffs (early and late) one takes 2.8 litres and the other 1.8 litres so might be wise to get 3 and then take the spare back, this way you will know what diff you have! my 03 registered 52 plate has the later smaller diff - I think our member solarman could tell you how to tell them apart by looking at them.

Two types of rear diff, one bolts in from the front (larger amount of oil), the other is build into the axle with a removable cover plate on the rear, (smaller oil capacity) do not know about the gear box differs other than the petrol and diesel have different ratios, Rick

Done the oil change and it needed it from the state of the oil. It took 3lts so it's the H233 and thanks for the link above which confirms what I found.
Just the gearbox now.
It has turned wet and miserable so the torsion bars will have to wait :(
Maybe tomorrow.
Peter
