those that came on the heatherday will know i said that i didnt think that i had full 4wd

well went out to briercliffe today and got stuck and it turns out that i dont have 4 wd lol i have 2 but my lsd is working fine lol

so now got to sort the hubs out :doh

Yep your lsd was working perfect when climbing up that track mate, shame it didnt get you over the top tho

Like i said i'd be looking at your auto hubs first... :thumbs

well thanks to my silly alloy wheels i have to take off each wheel to get to the hubs how silly is that

we will have to have a drift comp in the nw using 4wd vehicles lmao

You'll need to clear the area when I start trying to drift a near 3 ton permenent 4x4 250 bhp yank monster! :D

Would sound sure nice though! :naughty

On a seperate note, me and Dave won our class in the trial you watched Sunday :D

yer i know was good going makes me want to start doing it lmao

might have to look for a sammy now :lol

shame i dont have any space tho

right it seems i have a bigger problem that first thought, offs

now when i turn the drive shaft (with both wheels on the ground) i can see movement in the passenger but none on the drivers side :nenau

so i went and tried to move the drivers side shaft and it moves forwards and backwards till the auto locker stops it :nenau

so the drivers side isnt unlocking ans this is after doing 40ft reverse :(

so i went back to the main drive shaft and try to turn it a bit more then i have slight movement from the drivers side but only till the locker engages :nenau

now what does this mean i have a knackered diff ???:nenau

i know the passengers side need the locker looking at.:thumbs

but what about the drivers side ?? are these diffs made to allow 1 wheel to turn while the other is stationary or does this indicate that the diff is kaput :nenau

The diff should be ok these are built like tanks..
I suspect it is only the nearside automatic locking hub at fault, common fault There is a down load on how to service it, if you are lucky you may only need to clean and grease, but more likely the brake ring has failed. Cheap enough.
It seems that the right hand hub is unlocking ok as when you turn its shaft it locks each time.

You can always fit manual hubs eg from Milner.

Rustic

Manual hubs are the way forward if your going to take it off-road often, you'll be stripping the auto ones down constantly. Bin them...

If one locking hub is not working you'll have drive to neither front wheel anyway. (power to the wheel with least resistance)
On a seperate matter the drive shaft issue is a bit strange, not sure if i'm reading what you've written right though
If I have understood right, it seems you are missing a connection somewhere along the line... I think if your diff was kaput there would have been some nasty noises when you were spinning your back wheels whilst 4x4 was engaged on Sunday. I'm no mechanic though

it seems like i have the 1 hub not working as i swapped them over and the same thing happens just the other way round lol

so diff is fine

striped it out and the internal spring was compressed tried to expand it but once back together it still didnt work so it is u/s

i will have a think about the manuals as it isnt every day i go off road

on second thoughts with my clearance of the alloys that pertrude over the hubs i wouldnt be able to turn them manually

Course you would, just pop the little plastic cover off like I did on sunday and turn them. Quickest and cheapest fix is another auto hub tho, but they are really unreliable. I've had two sets fail on me, the ones on my 4trak and the first ones I had on the Mav.
Glad its nothing to do with the diff tho! :thumbs

Got to disagree - I don't see why they should be a source of weakness.....the locking mechanism is ONLY under any strain when engaging or disengaging....outside of that they are NOT part of the drive train in any way, so unless you are engaging them at 40mph (which wouldn't help) I'm struggling to see how they get busted frankly. I've had four of these trucks, five if you count the wifes, and done hundreds of thousands of miles on and off road and never had a problem.

Perhaps someone could explain how they get broken if it isn't through misuse?:nenau

my alloys cover the hubs completly you cat even get an 6mm allen key in the gap so i wouldnt be able to turn by hand unless i eas to use a tool to turn them but the only ones i have found have to be turned by hand

Karl - in the centre of the hub there is a little flat piece you turn to engage, not the whole hub ;)

Lacroupade - mine failed because I bought trucks which have never had their low box used, or seen off-road terrain. 10 years plus of not being engaged then suddenly they are expected to be reliable when regulally used... not likely! Both had the same fault, and it was the same fault as Karls... the spring goes faulty. I tried repairing the one that failed on my 4trak and it worked fine until I really needed it! I went on a weeks green laning holiday down south and the first day it failed again so was stuck with 2wd for a few days till a replacement was found. When the Maverick's failed I just binned it without looking...
To be fair every experienced off-roader I spoke to at the time said exactly what i'm saying - they aint worth spending the time messing about with or wondering if they will stay reliable on your next outing... manual = piece of mind to me. Something which is really important I feel when heading off-road, but each to their own!
And when a manual set is like £60 second hand... I didnt think twice!

right well i bought the auto hub off cnc so i have 4 wheel drive i hope lol well both hubs are locking know anyway :thumb2
