To be fair on your guy with the extent of cutting back and replacing plus parts ie steel and welding consumables i dont think 500quid is too bad
Hourly rate for a welder i would of thought would be around 15/20quid an hour

Well, we're talking about a Mechanic at £50. per hour!

Well theres your 500 quid then because theres a good days if not more work
My 15/20quid an hour was on the low side even for up here int north

Well, it's a 96, but it's not as bad as some I've seen!
And no, it didn't come from the coast!

This hasn't got this bad just over the last year, how did it pass the previous MOT?

I must have been fairly bad then.

You have a body mount with rot around it, surely that would have been a fail last year:doh

i'm just guessing what retail & the fact everything seems to get more expensive down south. We get trade of course ;)

Think I actually paid £60 for a sheet

Sounds more like it, but do you reckon you need 2mm ? 1.2 seems more than the Nissan body thickness anyway :thumbs

well what ever you choose 2mm or 1mm is cheaper, but i do give my truck a bit of a kicking cos theres loads of rocks & tree stumps

So, would 1.2 be thick enough for the side corners? There's a supplier on ebay who offers to bend it to any shape included in the price.
I can get box section & angle iron to do the front cross member no problem.
I am seriously thinking of giving it a go, even though I have physical problems.
I used to do a lot of mig welding, building High Seats for Deer Stalkers and living on a country estate meant welding something back together nearly every week, but I never did much "Up Hill" stuff! It was nearly always on the level.Maybe time to learn!

What sort of AMP range is needed for 1.2/2mm? I never used anything that thin.

I think your problem will be welding onto the rusty metal of what's left of your chassis, looking at the pictures, the rust extends well back into the structure.

Actually it doesn't, the pictures are deceiving.
It passed MOT (after new Brake & Fuel pipes) so obviously it can't be too bad.
It's mainly in the corners and about 6" back and 4" across the front.
The cross member isn't as bad as it looks either, it's only bad on one side, the front thats under bumper and radoiator is still solid (Pictiure is not the right way up! I'll do it again.

Right way up, worst bit is the plate at the rear, but the steel is really thin as paper, I think they must have used old tin cans!
You can see the Radiator mount just sticking through on left of picture

I hope your right, but I had problems welding my old Landy and that didn't have as much rust on the in side of the chassis as your pictures show.

So, if I don't fix it and just sell it, whats it worth?
