I have occasionally been having a weird noise from?
I'm not quite sure where.
It sounds like a dry sounding gearbox/transmission.problem.
Only occasionally on a mauling pull off from standstill it sounds terrible.
Like there's no fluid in the axle or box.
I will investigate more.and try and pinpoint the actual point of nastyness.
I did the diff oil 18 months ago.the gearbox 12 months ago.the transfer box ain't been done.
Anything else to look for?

Transfer box won't be doing anything unless in 4x4 mode .
Could it be a stone in your brakes or a dodgy rear brake shoe ?
Neighbours cat sleeping on your tyre :lol

As a total guess, if it is only on hard pull away's, I would start by checking the engine mounts.

Never had it on a T2, but on other cars I have owned in the past, ripped engine mounts have caused some very weird noises, that are hard to pinpoint, as bits start touching places they shouldn't. On one car, the alternator fan would hit the air scoop for the heater, so the whole dash made a noise that sounded like the end of the world.

I've torn at least 3 engine mounts and one gearbox mount  It's all the extra grunt I have :sly
I can say however that even with just one good engine mount I had no problems other than keeping hold of the gear stick , it was a bit of pudding spoon :lol

Unlikely to be that then...:lol:lol Might have guessed you would have done it.:augie

Noise is too brief and too occasional (once a week/fortnight) and rarely lasts more than 2seconds.so its difficult to describe.diagnose.
Breaking down isn't a problem as I'm covered.
Breaking down on the wild winter Yorkshire Moors on a green lane is a problem.

I've modified my engine mounts now so I can change them easily in situ . Just shorten the bolts to be just long enough to catch the nylock then the mounts can be got in and out with a simple jack under the engine :naughty

I had a couple of noises, both sounded like a machine gun going off, and only happened at certain revs,
No it wasn't Alex doing any target practice...lol:lol

1. loose bracket on the exhaust mount that attaches to the gear box. A double lock nut on the u bolt solved this, but also look for any cracks in the bracket...

2. the plastic under tray M6 bolts if loose can rattle.

However, both these noises can be created on demand, but only at certain revs.
So if intermittant, then these are unlikely.

Engine mounts, or the rear gearbox mount could well be the culprit.

We will give it a good going over tomorrow to see if we can find the culprit.
Got a surf, troll and a terrano with you on the York moors trip mate with full recovery gear so we would get you out and to safety should anything happen.:thumb2

What like rolling over on a bank :augie

Nah i Kidd, please take some pics n vids

I had a metal on metal grinding noise when turning left, only when going over 15 mph!
Turned out to be the rear near side side step mount pulling out of the step itself, so looks like I'll be losing them soon.

Last time we were offroad the pinion flange seal cover on the rear diff(thin metal disc that protects the rubber seal) broke away, now it's just a large washer on the pinion shaft between the drive shaft flange and the diff housing.

Issue is it rattles occasionaly, then sometimes not at all, but to fix it means removing the pinion nut and upsetting the back lash on the diff head.
