appears im going to have to change the brake discs and pads etc on my wifes vw passat. is this easy to do?
ive never worked with brakes before but was going to give it a shot as im on a really tight budget.
any help is appreciated.....

It should be straight forward to do  1st jack it up & put it on stands, remove the front wheels. The remove the brake pads then take the caliper off the hub by removing the 2 bolts at the back, then remove either the srew(s) of washers holding the disc in place. Sometimes they get stuck on the hub but a good hit with a big hammer gets them free  claen up the hub suface & fit you new disc's

you make it sound so easy!!!! dont want to take it apart then cant get the new ones on!! a bit apprehensive.... kwik fit are offering free brake checks so i'll nip round there tomorrow and see what needs done. I know they will be extortianate though!!

It's not that hard to do m8  I'd rather do your Passat's 4 times over than do my T2's  Taking your time it'll prob take about 1/2 hour a side max

When you get the hub off, take a picture with a digi camera!!
Before it all flies apart....lol

Hub off :? :? He's only replacing the disc's & pads so no need to strip the hub down

I may be wrong but I cant remember, hope Sweety can confirm, I think on a Passat you will need to wind back the pistons in the callipers rather than just push them back to fit new pads.

TBH Toolbox i'm not sure  it's been years since I did a set on a Passat but i'm sure it'll be easy to find out

I just looked on the web and there are many VW clubs, just google VW owners club etc, of course won't be a patch on our wonderful club.
The haynes manual may be available, but sounds easy compared to the Mav/terrano, which need a hub stripdown and took me nearly 3 hours a side. But I did pre-tension the bearings as per the book.

Just been and found a Haynes manual for Passat up to 96, on this model it is just a case of pushing back the pistons as normal.

Good idea to find a VW club Rustic, although I am sure you will be ok rag1873

ive got the haynes manual for the car and been on to vw sites, but this is the best site for info and knowledge. even though folk are advising on the vw sites id rather trust the advice from the members on this site as i feel i can trust you lot!!!
got a few quotes today and looking at least the £400 mark for supplied and fitted, will need to see how much i can source them for to fit myself.

Most own more than one type of motor.

Top man.

Mav.

Ouch that seem dear 8O My last car was a mondeo 2L zetec s & I bend the standard disc's in about 5 months so I replaced them with a set of drilled & groved Tar-ox disc's which cost £89 & resurface my brake pads as they were new, but if I had replaced then the I would have spent £140 max on new parts  I would price up a set of up rated disc's as you may find them around the same price but they should last much longer & give you better stopping power

dont know if to do the job myself or not... dont know if ive got the bottle incase i hit probelms half way through and the fact the missus says she wont trust it if i do it!! i want it done asap so i can get the terrano back off of her!!!

Try Ebay for your parts or even TMS or other motor factors round you.
I'm sure you can source them alot cheaper and do it yourself over a weekend!!

What model and year is you vw, ABS ?
Is it just the fronts you are going to change? Later have rear discs as well.

toolbox,

its a 2001 y-reg sports. its discs and pads front and back unfortunately, all which need done!!

the wifes talking me out of doing it myself... i try to do all repairs myself but have never touched brakes before. just dont know if i can take the risk with brakes, especially as they are on suzies car and shes 6 months pregnant!

That makes sense on the price you had quoted, I think the back discs may be a hub ass. and disc all in one.
