I was told to look for a number when testing it. It was either ohms or resistance, I can't remember. :doh

Reeeeeeeeeeeeee-wind :nenau are you talking about the thermostat that lives in your hot water system? 'cause I am. It simply opens up when it gets hot , like say 85 degrees.
To test, bung your "stat" in a pan of water on your tin tent's billy stove. Apply gas and heat up while observing your handy tin tent thermometer , or your mum's jam making one. At about 85 degrees the thermo"stat" should open :D
It's like magic and requires no multimeter gizmo ohmage :lol
Enjoy

the stat may have a number stamped on it which indicates at what temp it opens :thumb2

Cock, I mean the tamp sensor for the electronic thermostat thingy, ya know, so the ecu knows engine temp......I think there'd been a confusion :clap:doh:D

Well there's a metal box in the dash with amp zexel written on it soooo, I guess yes, but not the complicated ones like the tdi
Ah ok then so you'd be looking for a reading of the temp.sender I guess but you still need to check the thermostat for physical opening at set temperature:thumb2

I've not checked that, I will do, when I boil the kettle:D

you have a wonderful way of putting things, love it, Rick

what if mam dont make jam, mind you, no will leave it there.

my temp gauge never moves pulling 1.7 tonnes over woodhead pass
which is frankly a mountain pass. stays at a touch below half.

mine goes up quite high, when coming back from wales it got really hot and smoke came from under the dash at the center, that's why i thought the matrix is buggered, but the matrix wont cause over heating
