Hi

This is my first post to the fourm I hope someone can help.
I have a 2.7 td auto with overdrive year 2000 Terrano It starts a vibration once you go over 50 mph and fades out after 60 mph.

I have looked at the prop shaft and the hardy splicers they feel fine so just greased them.

Also I had all four wheels balanced yesterday.

Anyone have any sugestions where to start looking next.

Thank you

jack wheels up and check for play , checking tracking might be a good idea too

Thanks for your reply I have adjusted the front wheel bearings and had all the wheels balanced plus the tracking checked.
I wonder if it is coming from the auto box or the transfer box

Highly unlikely I'd say..not something I've seen or heard of in all my years of owning Mavs/T2s.

Its dead right speed characteristics for a front wheel balance problem though.

Is your truck a MkIII facelift, i.e. with square headlights? If so, its probable you have fixed hubs, so that unlike the MkIIs, the drive shafts are permanently rotating (4wd is selected/engaged at the transfer box instead by free-wheeling auto hubs) so might worth seeing if theres anything loose in the front drive area; if not, maybe get the fronts balanced ON THE CAR...?

Als worth checking that your brake calipers are fully disengaging - sticky pistons is a very common problem on these.....

balancing im going for . get them to re balance then take them off the machine and re check these wheels are notorious for being crap to ballance

Where did you get your wheels balanced??? Kwikfit / ATS etc are CR*P at doing large sized tyres. Have a look in the yellow pages for somewhere that does tractor / agricultural tyres and take it there for a balancing...

Had same prob on my old T2.... fiver spent - all sorted! :thumb2

20 mins, 8 bolts.. drop the front prop off and see if makes any difference.

Mark the flanges first though.
There is a note in the workshop manual re: adjusting runout on the props by rotating them W.R.T. to the flanges.

Thanks for your comments

It is a Terrano 11 2000 model with the square headlights. Auto with overdrive it has done a few miles
but the clock only shows 24k.

I need to find another place for the wheel balancing

Taking out the front drive/prop shaft sound swort a try

The vibration is quite harsh it even makes the dash vibrate a little

have you got the correct wheel nuts Noel? the T2 uses nuts with the inner face chamfered so that it centres each hole...if its using flat-faced nuts the wheel won't be centrally located so will be off balance....

Noel, welcome to the site. Another Irishman joining the site can only be a good thing :clap:clap Think I have the same model as your good self except mine is not automatic. 24K on the clock on a 00 T2?? Has the clock been changed. Mine was changed at 33k but it was noted in the service book that came with the truck when I got it and the garage also made it clear that the milage was 33k more than the clock showed. Can't say I have had any sign of the problem you are experiencing. Getting the wheel balancing rechecked is probably a good suggestion of a place to start. Keep us posted.

Theres an interesting suggestion. Are they the original or correct rims and nuts in the first place do you know?

wobble

big black is right KWIK fit et al are shite, the balancing machine does not fit the rim properly

go to a commercail or 4X4 garage and get them checked

i had a similar problem and got the wheels balanced properly and 1000% better

Hi Everyone

I have carried out a bit more research on the vibritation.

I removed the rear prop shaft put a cover on the rear of the gearboxto top oil leaking out.
Then I selected 4 wheel drive and took it for a short drive only a few miles and no vibrations at all
at 50 to 60 mph.

After returning I took a closer look at the propshaft and there was a small dent on it so I think it is
out of balance, I will try for a second hand one or find someone who may be able to balance it

Thanks for all your replies

I will keep you all informed

getting the original prop balanced would likely be the better cost option, just a question of finding a good company in your local to do the job.

Hi Guys

I beleive I have found the problem causing the vibration.

I took the prop shaft off placed a cover over the rear of the box to keep the oil in.

Then I selected 4 wheel drive and took it for a short drive geting up to 50 -60 mph and
no vibration.
On closer inspection I noticed a small dent on the prop shaft which I assume has put it out of balance.

I will confirm the soloution when I put my hands on another propshaft.

Doe anyone know if the propshaft on a auto is the same as a manual.

Regards

Noel
