hi guys, thought I would revisit this issue I reported ages ago.

Originally I thought this vibration type noise I get, under load (for example, third gear at 20 mph-30 mph) was from the knackered flexi pipe - this has since been replaced.

The noise is still present, and the best I can describe it is say if I am going up hill, switch from second to third and accelerate there is a noticeable vibration that isn't the engine itself, or the fan. The vibration goes away when the revs get higher and I reach an appropriate speed for that gear.

I don't have any other issues, just that noise/vibration - which isn't as bad as it used to be but that could be how I drive now I am used to this Terrano.

Can anyone suggest anything I can check, to try and narrow down what could be causing this noise? Its does sort of vibrate the cabin a bit - it is very like the engine underload, like if you were trying to crawl up hill in fifth gear, but I can hear the engine and that is coping fine...:bow

perhaps you are used to driving the petrol stilo as opposed to the t2 , and use revs as though you are in the stilo ?

Having just changed my flywheel from DMF to SMF I've noticed that I get similar symptoms when I'm in too high a gear due to losing the dampening effect of the DMF. Engine won't be labouring but there is a distinct driveline vibration until I change down and up the revs. Could that be it? :nenau

Mine does it at anything below about 1,500 rpm if you load it up at all - When mine does it I just put it down to me being too lazy to change down to the right gear.

Goes away if you back off the throttle or get above 1,500 rpm. Usually happens to me when taking a junction in 3rd that should really be in 2nd.

If these are the same symptoms I think it's down to driving style.

Mine has always done it, under load, at 1500rpm and below no matter what gear I am in, except 1st. T2 just doesn't like working at low revs. I put it down to the natural resonance point of the body. As you say, raise the revs just a bit, or reduce the loud pedal a bit and it disappears which is why I believe it is the interaction of the engine vibration and the body itself.

I have thought of stuffing sponge or the like in the body cavities when I've got an internal card off but if they get wet then its a sure invitation for the tin worm.

Solution: Keep the revs above 1500.

cheers guys!

Interesting suggestion about the flywheel/clutch - I couldn't say for sure as ive only had the car about 8 month.

It could well be driving style, but I've had these before and my last Maverick (SWB) didn't do it (the vibration) it just laboured as you would expect a car to.

Although to be fair, I could well have forgotten, so I am going to see Jim on Monday to compare mine with his, that should clear things up if his is the same!

Swaggy's solution is probably it, but a bit more experimentation is called for...!:bow

Sorry Clive should have been clearer - wasn't suggesting you change clutch and flywheel.

What I was meaning is that now my Trol has a solid flywheel it is behaving similar to your Terrano, which will also have a solid flywheel, so possibly a case of changing driving style a bit as suggested by ogri and swaggy :nenau

I've had a slight vibration at the rear of mine under 1400rpm, found the dog lead in the back door mesh was vibrating off the door panel so took it out & things got a bit better but it was still there & sounded a bit like the rear bumper as I know mines been replaced so tightened up all of the screws in the wheel arch for the bumper & it's almost gone but the tiny bit of vibration i'm getting now i'm sure is the number plate bracket as it's smashed & wobbly:doh

Check the UJ's on your propshaft, that was the cause of it on my truck coupled with the fact that I'd compressed my springs beyond return and they were rattling away in their cups which have now been replaced with LWB ones :sly

Exhaust as already mentioned is an easy one to miss, fuel tank guard can also rattle I've noticed, the one I saw in the scrap yard recently had 2 pairs of gardening gloves wedged between the tank and the guard either side which I can only assume was to address that issue

I hope you get it resolved buddy, if you can, take a passenger in with you and get them to record the noise if it's audible enough to record and upload it and we'll see what the trained ears of us guys on here think it is :)

cheers Banshee.

I tried to pay attention on my way home today, and im fairly sure it isn't my driving style. I *THINK* im driving correctly for this type of car, plus ive been driving them for years so I am leaning more towards something is vibrating - I just don't know what!

Hopefully when I see Jim on Monday, we will have a clearer idea of what is going on - we are going to compare noises!

Oh yeah I can make noises to compare

Wonder if it's the deep almost shudder that both mine do?

I get this exact noise, again, if rpm is low. All symptoms described here sound normal, it's a deep vibration throughout the entire truck, I always out it down to low rom for condition.

Also since I have been off-roading my mirrors vibrate like buggery ay low rpm, very annoying noise!

could be guys, but I am not 100% sure yet. Hopefully Monday will reveal all...

Clivvy came over to my house this morning, we took my truck out and were able to replicate Clivvys noise and it's the same noise that both my terranos make.

We also investigated another noise and vibration that mine has and were both puzzled.

Any update on this?

well, today I went to see Jim and his car is pretty much exactly the same as mine. So I can only assume the "noise" I am hearing is in fact just the car!

as said before, I suppose its all down to driving habit.
