Hi, new to this and just bought a terrano 53 plate 2.7. It runs great and does everything it should. It's done 78000 fully documented and has a receipt for a recon gearbox some 18 months ago.
However it makes this annoying vibration type noise in all gears except perhaps first. Sometimes if you just hold or move the transfer gear stick it stops, just wondering if anyone can throw any light on it as I am off to Ireland in a couple of months time and would love to sort it if possible. Also doesn't seem to do it when it's cold?
Should add that it doesn't do it all the time only when accelerating and occasionaly when slowing down.
Any help much appreciated
Steve

No idea if it helps, but mine (1997 TDI) does the same - shaking/vibrating transfer gear stick. But: only at idle/very low speed. Just lightly holding the stick cures it, it seems to be the metal part of the gear stick touching the edges of the hole it is in.

Hi and welcome. Mines an 04 so has fixed hubs therefore the front prop will be turning whenever the wheels are turning. May be an idea to remove the front prop to see if it still the same? There'll be more experience along shortly. :thumbs

Thanks for early replies sounds like this is quite normal, wondering if some sort of additive might help?
Any help appreciated

Hello and welcome,
I am not one of the more experienced :) !!! but as a thought. Did they put the transfer box and gear stick gaiters back the right way round when they reconditioned the gearbox, could one of them be pressuring the a stick. Mine has the stitching on both levers to the rear nearer the handbrake. Could the soundproofing under the gaiter be doing the same thing?
As said others with more experience will be along soon.

As Blocky says remove the front prop, and see if it is the same, you could remove the fixed hubs which is easier, knock off the cap, remove the circlip from the shaft, remove the 6 nuts and pull off hub, with both off the front prop will not turn (only by oil drag when cold) down side is keeping dirt out, but a short run on a dry day should be OK, unless you have centre caps on your wheels then a longer run will be fine, Rick

Can you engage into 4WD High and Low and does the light appear on the dash?

Mine was doing this and turned out to be a seized arm on the transfer box that we freed off and now works perfectly :naughty

Hi and thanks for suggestions. Gaiters are on the right way etc. Light comes on when 4 wheel drive etc selected and all works well.
Listening to the noise again today perhaps it's more of a shushing noise really definetly more prominent when accelerating but sometimes there when slowing down. Not there if you are just on the throttle rather than accelerating and much less noticeable when cold.
Have taken it back to garage I bought from as it has 1 month warranty, they have heard it checked all the levels and described it as normal. The guy there does own one and says his is the same?
May take off front prop as suggested at weekend but not sure what it will prove to be honest.
Thanks again for previous posts

Might be hard unless you have a passenger handy but maybe you could record the noise

if the UJs are going (later models did not provide grease point, plus they are turning all the time) so they have a history of early failure, remove the prop or hubs to prove it, Rick

Thanks all front prop removed and it does appear to have stopped the noise through the transfer box. The prop has a small amount of play in the rear U.J but seems to have play in the section where it reduces in size about one third the way up...does that make any sense to anyone please?

Not by my car at the min but I'll take a wander up to it later on and see if I can see what you are referring to

The UJ's are best pressed back in with a strong vice, I used a Record No3 that we have at the school I work at and that worked a dream :naughty

I had exactly that noise and vibration which turned out to be that sliding joint on the front propshaft. Replaced with a used one from an older model with the grease nipples on the joints. People told me there were different shafts so maybe I just happened to drop lucky but fitted perfect. If you look in the depths of my posts on my profile you'll find the thread when we were tracking it down.
