I think my '02 3.0 engine is in a critical way and I'm wondering what has happened.

Whilst going slow into works car park the engine started sounding like a clattery 1.0 diesel, lost power and died a bit like running out of diesel. Luckily I could coast into a parking space in ten yards. I tried starting the engine but all I got was a whiney wirring as it tried to turn over. The starter motor is working but it sounds as if it isn't having to do much work as if there is no compression.

There is plenty of diesel and the battery is fine. Diesel was really low on Friday and topped up on Saturday to 1/4.

Now I was thinking that it could be a fuel blockage. The diesel filter primer is solid but I tried that several times and nothing but the whiney wirring. I took the oil filler cap off and all looks okay (cogs and chain).

Someone suggested looking at the cam cogs and chain whilst turning the engine over to see if they move ... they don't! It has been suggested that the cam chain tensioner/chain/cogs are knacked and could be looking at a wrecked engine.

It didn't sound drastic at the time but now I'm a little aprehensive. The car is in a garage awaiting an update.

The car has done 148K. Now I thought the cams were geared but should this chain or any tensioner have been replaced at some point?

I could be wrong but as far as I’m aware the camshaft is gear driven and it’s the injector pump that’s chain driven. Surely if the chain has got a fault it is just not driving the pump.
Also be careful of people giving their opinions who don’t know anything about these trucks.
If you’re in Lincolnshire I think I’ve heard people talk about someone called Mikee that knows his way around these trucks, surely someone will be along with more info soon.

pump cog driven cam chain driven never hered of a chain problen as it is so short but if the cam is not turning when you use the starter and it just wherrs away yes could be cam chain failed and stuffed valves. bad news if that it.

cam is chain driven like has been said will be expensive a lot to be said for the 2.7td terrano which is why i am selling mine i just bought and collecting a 2.7td on saturday

He knows the drill :naughty

Do the 3.0 Terrano's need the same precautions as the 3.0 Patrols?
Catch can, egr and boost controller I think it was but not too clued up on it?

I'll have done 2 of those 3 on my 2.7 by the time my turbo goes back on my 2.7 anyway for precaution, we all just know that Nissan's champion was the TD27TI :sly

On the subject of catch cans, and really sorry to hijack the thread but can someone link me to a decent but not too pricey catch can (no garish colours or chrome please)

This is supposed to be a good popular one. Can't imagine a cheaper one would be much different though :nenau

As for other upgrades, I would like to fit a catch can but the dawes valve/egr blank is a bit above me I reckon.

Is the 3.0L engine in a Terrano referred to as engine type ZD30?

Would say the 3 litre in the t2 does not need any mods and indeed the problems that were encountered with the early troll y61 were resolved. Had mine 2 years and was cautious have the money pit trol buts it's been spot on. Goes like stink and no idiot light's.

I'd say it's all about kiss. Keep it simple seriously/stupid and trust Nissan do know what their doing.

I'm glad you had a good experience with your Patrol Tom.
I'm really enjoying mine also.
I purchased my Patrol some three years ago second-hand of course. She was an MOT failure and needed some TLC.
I had some paperwork, I didn't trust the dealer, but I always let the car do the talking anyway.
This truck seemed honest. And it was the rarer manual transmission!
I researched the Y61 like mad, and soon realised the reasons for the modifications we're talking about, and their importance for this engine type.
I can honestly say that every modification to that engine/vehicle I have made, she has thanked me back ten-fold in performance.
I basically had a new blank canvas to work with, so I ran with doing the mods, and it's working for me.
We've been over the Alps twice and travelling the length of the Pyranees in June.
As for trusting Nissan. I'm hoping to get her mandatory airbag recall work done before our trip.

Apologies HantsHog
I really hope the diagnosis is in your favour and I hope your truck is up and about soon.
Best wishes

Cheers, but it doesn't sound good but I'm hoping for a positive diagnosis from the garage. In the meantime I'm looking at how much my Terrano is worth ('02 SVE 148K) against a possible replacement engine and labour if it comes to it. Otherwise it's spares/repair.

i have been in contact with a chap as he has for sale a good running 3l lump and auto box and other spares for sale,at tattershall.

he want 255 for the 3l lump.very good price i think for a good one.he want 255 for the auto box as well, again good price or 450 for both.

That is a good price. I'm still waiting for the garage to do their checks but if a replacement is needed that would be ideal and is about 20 miles from me. Mine is a manual, would that cause problems? Can you on me the contact details please?
