I think my '02 3.0 engine is in a critical way and I'm wondering what has happened.
Whilst going slow into works car park the engine started sounding like a clattery 1.0 diesel, lost power and died a bit like running out of diesel. Luckily I could coast into a parking space in ten yards. I tried starting the engine but all I got was a whiney wirring as it tried to turn over. The starter motor is working but it sounds as if it isn't having to do much work as if there is no compression.
There is plenty of diesel and the battery is fine. Diesel was really low on Friday and topped up on Saturday to 1/4.
Now I was thinking that it could be a fuel blockage. The diesel filter primer is solid but I tried that several times and nothing but the whiney wirring. I took the oil filler cap off and all looks okay (cogs and chain).
Someone suggested looking at the cam cogs and chain whilst turning the engine over to see if they move ... they don't! It has been suggested that the cam chain tensioner/chain/cogs are knacked and could be looking at a wrecked engine.
It didn't sound drastic at the time but now I'm a little aprehensive. The car is in a garage awaiting an update.
The car has done 148K. Now I thought the cams were geared but should this chain or any tensioner have been replaced at some point?
