Hi guys new to this site but here goes, the indestructible engine was giving probs, white smoke, loss of power, missing. Took to local garage, after head scratch possible head gasket possible turbo, was advised to replace engine and have it fited by matey(garage) found recon unit 595.00, had it fitted, needed turbo says matey oh and by the wayyour radiators had it! I sourced and he fitted the same.He had the Mav for a long time (3months) to "tweak" matey says he couldnt get it over 3000rpm, could I take and run it for a while to see if it clears itself!!Me being gullable says sure. after a weekend hears what i found. cant get it above 3000rpm, no powr uphill, wont cold strt but when warm is fine, smoke at first when it does start(easy start in air filter) then ok.
1. It rolls about side to side.
2.Front grill broke and screwed on
3.Fast idle had been cut remved
4.Tappets ticking
5.themostat gone
6.Poz Battery connector snapped
7.Starter.motor bolts loose(one missing)
8.exhaust to manifold gap
9. engine wobbles on mounts
10.Accelerator linkage floating, stuff missing
11.tracking is way out
12.power steering resevoir empty.
13.oilfilter loose, leaking oil.
I love my Mav and I am going to nurse it back to health but I need a lot of help.
Warranty is now out on engine due to time matey took and I'm very MAD[/b]

Hi Hopefull and welcome to the club,
Very sorry to hear of your problem, seems your local garage aren’t fit to service a wheelbarrow.
It should be down to the garage, to put right all that they have obviously bodged when fitting the engine.
I wouldn’t advise using easy start regularly it will damage the engine, only use in desperate situations.
The starting and running may or may not be the same fault. Firstly you need to check the fuel system, make sure no air is being drawn in anywhere starting at the back above the rear axle and checking the fuel lines forward to the filter and ensure this has been replaced then look in the download section on the club and clean the mini filter in the injection pump inlet, this may have been all that was wrong with the original engine from what you have outlined above.
If its still not starting check the heater plugs are working, there is also a download for this, and one for adjusting the tappets while your there.
If it still wont start then I would find out if the injection pump has been replaced as the timing may not be set correctly.

shouldnt you be taking it back to the garage???? they told you try new engine, so you did...NEW ENGINE??? and still they said get a radiator, then it still isnt any different...?? MATE take it back and PROPER kick off with that garage..

anyway, sounds like you have an air leak somewhere, start with that-thats all hoses, pipes etc entering and leaving the engine...including the filters/air filter.

Welcome aboard and so sorry to hear of your problems. Think you've had the advice off the others that I would of said. Might be worth a phone call to Trading Standards too.

and threaten them with small claims court - you can do it online, it costs £25 and you cannot get whacked with any other costs - the other bloke could turn up with a £500/hour barrister (sounds highly unlikely in his case!) and he has to foot the bill....tell him you'll do him for all the money you paid him AND the cost of putting it right since you can't trust him any longer to do it.

Ooph, that's a stinker job he's done there, how much labour does he have in mind?
You could have bought a TDi for less than the engine alone!
You could sell the old engine too, as said earlier it's probably fine:cool:

Poorly Mav 2.7td 1994

Hi guys, firstly what an overwhelming response thanks so much, got a long way to go but I'll get there, its an ongoing shouting match with the garage at the moment, I haven't paid all the money and I'm not going to (taking advice from a lawyer) I found this site after Difflock and Terranosaurus was advertising this club, back to the Mav as I Do love her for some reason.
Done the mini filter and guess what? she runs fine and will fire first time???!!!
Makes me think this WAS the original prob as this came over from the first engine ouch ouch ouch!!!!been along time since I've played with engines but I guess its gonna be fun?? Tappets next, had alook in the turbo bit that says turbo on it and ther's oil in there, is that Normal?, she starts fine bit of smoke, few minutes no smoke at all, (how do I know if the turbo is working?)Think I've got enough to play with for now, once again thanks for your help and support, be in touch soon:thumb2

Poorly Mav 2.7td 1994

Hi Chaps, been playin wih the Mav, had alook at doing the tappets, the download is brilliant, two small probs for me though, 1. How do i know when the respective piston is at TDC?? sorry chaps I feel like a real Numpty but like I said its been along time, 2. on looking at the top pulley I seem to have some kind of hub?? so cant turn the nut coz I cant see it, the hub looks like the centre of a centrifugal fan without the blades if that makes sense, any ideas, please dont take the mick to much :lol???????!!!!

Hi there Zippy, tried to load pics but keeps telling me upload failed!!

Description:- Looking at front of engine, there are two pulleys one at the bottom and one below the rocker cover, this one has this thing on it, it looks like a fan but without the blades, it is cast alluminium about 7" in Dia, with small fins around it edge, rotates independtly of the pulley when at a standstill but with the engine running it rotates with it, hope this helps.:nenau

That’s sounds like the viscous coupling on the water pump; you should have fan blades attached to it, unless you have an electric fan mod. Don’t tell me the garage never put the blades back on.

The timing mark is on the bottom pulley, it’s a notch that is cut in to the pulley that should align with a pointer to the left of the pulley looking from the front.
To get some idea of where it should be, if you turn the engine over by hand with the rocker cover off, at the point the valves rock (exhaust valve nearly close and inlet just starting to open) on number 4 cylinder, this will be very close to TDC on number one cylinder.

Thanks Jeremy, the Mav does have electric fans they were on it when I bought it, is this common? and why? The TDC thing, how do i hand crank the engine with a Viscous fan? do I use a big socket on the bottom pulley, once again thanks for your help:D

Electric fans are retro fitted mainly because they only work when they are needed and can increase power and fuel efficiency a little.

I normally use a socket on the power steering pump pulley, holding in on the drive belt to tension it (preventing it from slipping) as you turn the engine.
You may find the lack or room makes it difficult to get a socket on the bottom pulley.

Thanks chaps, I'll see if I can do the tappets today:thumb2

Poorly Mav 2.7td 1994

Thanks for all your help guys :bow, tappets done runs a bit sweeter and quieter now :clap, gonna tackle some of the bits n pieces now accelerator linkage, fast idle etc. Is the anti roll bar the chunky round bar running across the front, almost wheel to wheel with a couple of joints on the ends if so and the joints arenot too good could this account for the rolling about thing or is this more likely to be shockers?? Glutton for punishment but loving it?!!!!

yep the big bar is the arb, some people have removed it completely. what are the ends like on the arb. lose or nice and tight and play? you can get just the bushes from ebay, not bad price, or the complete ends. also from ebay.

all new bushes would be good any way.

Poorly Mav 2.7td 1994

Cheers for that Zippy, had a look at the ends they are wobbly and loose also in the middle of the arb there are a couple of brackets about 18" apart, looks like they should have some kind of rubber in there???
