The Government relaxed the duty on alternative fuels a few months back. You are now allowed up to 2500L/year for personal use, without having to register for or pay duty. Just 1 litre over and you should register and pay duty on it all - the recommendation is to keep records (receipts) of all the fuel you use, dino and veg so that if asked to you can show what you've been using.

Just bet me to it HB...lol
But will it bring your emissions down and is 263 g/km the emissions of my T2,seems very high!! :?

does that push your tax up then navara 3.0td £185 or whatever it is

Jace, I believe commercials are exempt from the new tax bands thats why navaras are so popular!

Can't see how it can really bring your emissions down, what it does do is lower net your carbon footprint cos the veg crop absorbed the CO2 in the first place. CO2 emissions are really only a measure of MPG, X amount of CO2 out means Y amount of fuel in - simple as that, the government just chose to measure it that way cos it fit with their "green taxation scheme".

I bunged 6 litres of the stuff in last night and then topped up to a full tank so I'm guessing roughly 10% ish. You can smell the difference with the exhaust, not that I go around sniffing her exhaust you understand  She seems quieter and a bit smoother or is it just me , she does seem to run a little hotter though. Still a bit of a sceptic about it though :? but thought I would like to dip my toes in so to speak.
I have to say if you keep some receipts just in case the tax man wants to look. So if you pay for veg oil by cash then who's to say how much you have used, 2,500 or 25,000 litres of the stuff.

Following on from the current cost of veg/SVO Mr Sadbwstd here had an afternoon to kill while in Leicester yesterday (and free gas in the Co. car ;) )

Prices from around that area:-

Costcutter £2.09/3 litres (70p/l)
Spiceland Food (Asian food wholesaler) £10.99/15 litres (73.2p/l)
Sainsbury £2.21/3 litres (73.6p/l)
Asda £2.21/3 litres
Lidl £0.78/litre
Somerfield £2.45/3 litres (81.6p/l)

I ought to get out more?

Paul, that's sad m8  not much of a saving though is there when you look at like that

VEG OIL

HI JT.
PLEASED TO SEE YOU HAVE DIPPED A TOE IN. :p
IF LIKE ME AND CAMERAMAN WE SEEM TO BE GETTING A SLIGHT INCREASE IN MPG .OR IT COULD JUST BE THE THICKER OIL IS HOLDING FLOAT UP BETTER :?
THE REAL SAVING WILL COME WHEN THE WEATHER IMPROVES AND WE CAN INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF SVO WE PUT IN .
IF I WERE TO BE GOING TO SAY CORNWALL TOMMORROW I WOULD GO AS HIGH AS 75% (after warm up )WITHOUT ANY WORRIES I KNOW MY OLD TRUCK IS A NAIL SO AM NOT TO BOTHERED ABOUT KILLING IT ,BUT TO BE HONEST I FEEL CONFIDENT IN RUNNING IT ON A HIGH SVO MIX.
ONE THING I DID FIND OUT THOUGH IS THE SUNFLOWER OIL I BOUGHT IN 15LTR DRUMS IS A LOT THINNER THAN THE 3LTR RAPE SEED OIL
I AM AT PRESENT RUNNING AT 25% MIX .(sun flower tesco)
ON START UP I START AS NORMAL AND WHEN OIL LIGHT GOES OUT I PULL HAND THROTTLE OUT A LITTLE AND THEN ENGINE SMOOTHES OUT
BY INCREASING TICK OVER 50 RPM OR SO.
REMEMBER THIS IS ALSO A COLD START DEVICE AND INCREASES FUEL TO AIR MIX.
AS REGARDS SMELL THE SUNFLOWER OIL DOESNT SMELL AS STRONG AS RAPE SEED OIL.
REGARDING EXTRA ENGINE HEAT I HAVE NOT NOTICED ANY DIFFERANCE .
I HAVE NOW DONE CLOSE TO 3,000 MILES ON VARIOUS MIXES OF UP TO APPROX 35% WITH NO PROBLEMS ,OTHER THAN A SLIGHTLY ROUGH TICK OVER UNTIL SHE IS WARM THEN SWEET AS A NUT
DONT FORGET TO PUSH IT BACK IN THOUGH
best regards.iandouglas

Mines not has refined as your's Ian, I aint got the cold start knob. I'm assuming that's because it's a TDi.
Does anyone know what capacity the tanks are on these things?

for any one interested!

Dan has a job on monday to fix a Terrano, 2.7td (not tdi) that has been running on veg oil for some months and has lost power!

If it turns out to be a veg oil related problem and not just the usual minin filter, fuel filter etc. i will post the fndings!

i think so, it seems more than a coincidence it has begun to cause problems now the weather is colder, but we dont know any details yet so, I wont start to speculate!

VEG OIL

TOOLBOX WROTE
Oil dilution can occur, during cold starting, idle or part load, when using veg oil, leading to a rise in oil level on the dipstick. If left unchecked (not changing the oil) this could cause problems with the turbo and bearings etc

I HAVE FOUND THE FOLLOWING .
In his letter the september issue of Transport Engineer Tony Brooks expresses frustration at the difficulty in sourcing information on long term experence with Bio Diesel. It is clear that many potential users may need simular infomation, and i would like to comment from the point of view of a company specialising in Lubricants and lubrication.
first of all , users should excerise care in controlling the quallity of Bio Diesel they use. The term "BioDiesel" discribes product derived from vegetable oil after after a specific chemical prosses often dubbed RME(rapeseed methyl esters) and complying with EN14214.
This used to be at a 100% level, but is more frequently seen at the pump after distalution with conventional diesel fuel at a 5% blend so called (B5)
Large companys use 20% up to 100% biodiesel. At the 5% level it is unlikely that users notice any long term difference compaired with conventional diesel. But a possitive benifit may be a LONGER LIFE FOR FUEL PUMP owing to the addition of this highly lubricious material to fuel.
At 100% biodiesel and strengths approagching this some users of biodiesel and VEGETABLE oil have experenced [GELLING] in the engine oil sump.
The lubricant seems to turn to a greasy consistency, affecting oil recirculation and potentially , resulting in damaging consequences.
One cause of the problem is passage of fuel into the lubricant sump.
POSSIBLY as a result of poor atomisation at the injectors.
At high engine tempretures unsaturated fatty acids in the fuel breaks down. oxidising , cross linking ,increasing viscosity. and at worst resulting in gelatinous deposit suspended in the lubricant.
This is a result in partially burnt fuel passing piston rings, so the more prown to blow by an engine is the more likely it is to experience GELLING.
And since gelling is a result of a chemical change of fuel held at lubricant sump tempreatures. it is catalysed, and accelerated by wear metals.
VEGETABLE based fuel needs to be HOT for this gelling to occur.
It can happen in a warm sump even after vehicle is parked up.
IS it a common occurrence ? NO . And remember it does`nt happen at all at 5%strength(B5) but only at MUCH stronger concentrations.
Uusers should be aware of the possibility nevertheless and carry out oil condition/monitoring if they have concerns.
They should be prepaired to change oils more freqently.
some units will accumulate fuel more rapid than others.
Our own research here at Fuchs lubricants UK has confirmed that some lubricants help to keep the problem at bay.
For instance , biolubricants based on the same miscible vegetable ester chemistry can really help to stableise and dissolve some of these deposits.

Following on from this www.difflock.com are planning to sell a range of engine biolubricants in the very near future ;)

Hey Plank, have you heard owt off ya m8 yet about the Terrano with lack of power :?:

it is almost certiainly the pump, but it is going for diagnistic checks as LCUK just to rule out anyhting else! but whether or not it is veg oil related is too early to say.

We do know he has been running it on virtualy neat veg ol for about 18 months though

I will get back to yo ASAP

3 litre bots of veg in the local CoOp have just jumped another 20p this week! :x

i reckon if fuel protests make fuel scarce veg oil will be as dear as diesel!
