Hi Mate

You should steer clear of Sunflower Oil in my experience, it runs OK but smokes a lot when the turbo spools

You want Vegetable Oil or Rapeseed Oil, you'll find Vegetable Oil if you read the small print will be Rapeseed Oil but is only advertised as Vegetable Oil because "Rapeseed" is "Politically Incorrect" for obvious reasons.

Try to avoid Soya extracted Veg Oil as that runs crappy and very lumpy for some reason, also don't worry if you see E990 or "Anti Foaming Agent" it has no effect on the running

In my opinion I wouldn't run 100% first time round, I'd do a 50/50 mix and see if you notice any power difference or any running difference, then gradually increase your mixture, bear in mind that it is gradually getting colder which will also affect the running as the cooler it gets the thicker your oil will be putting excess strain on your fuel pump and will also be harder to start

You shouldn't need to add anything to SVO "Straight Vegetable Oil" if you ever delve into WVO "Waste Veg Oil" give me a shout and we'll compare notes :) :thumb2

Hope that helps

Thanks pal, your a good bunch of lads on this forum, I well pleased I joined :thumb2

cooler temps require thinning it down with petrol or diesel. I choose petrol cos it's cheaper and is better at lowering the viscosity of the oil than diesel. 5-10%. 15-20% if it gets cold cold.

Only thing to add is it's legal as long as you use less than 2500 litres of the stuff in any rolling 12 month period. Need to be doing a fair mileage to burn that though. Best to keep a wee log of how much you pour in each time so you are in the clear should mister HMRC start asking.

I'm not even going to get started on this, it's ridiculous

I've been doing a bit of research and only 2 people have ever been convicted for not claiming Fuel Duty on it but both of these people owned haulage firms, I don't think they care about Joe public, they have no way of checking how much your actually using

Totally agree, but I keep a log anyway just in case - it's a bit sketchy and often made up as I pump from a barrel with no accurate measure into the tank. We're supposed to keep a log by HMRC rules, but as you say, I don't think they'll ever ask for it and it's as pointless as can be. However, I thought I should let the OP know what the rule is, so he can realise the futility of it and ignore it!

Yes dont want the judge asking OP "who is this Banshee and arcascomp you speak of?" :lol

If its WVO.Then surely the tax has already been paid?If not WVO,then who is gonna know how much anyone uses?

The tax is road fund duty - used to be you had to pay for every litre you used, but HMRC decided to grant individuals the right to have 2500l a rolling year road fund free as they spent more money collecting the tax than they got. As part of that they stipulated that you should keep a record of the veg oil/bio (not bought from forecourt) you use to ensure you don't exceed the limits.

As Banshee correctly points out, there is no way in hell they could track what you've really used anyway, so it's a pointless paperwork exercise!

Is it really that easy to run on oil ? Does it smell like your driving a chip pan

I don't think so. Just smells different really. I get mine from the paki shop 20ltr tin of KTC 17.99. They sell allsorts spices and rice and fresh chicken and fuel for the T2 :thumbs

Edit: Get a decent bendy funnel with a wide end. I keep mine in the boot with a rag inside it

Yes it does smell like a Bad chip shop, in fact some of the dodgy mobile catering trailers at the Great Dorset Steam fair smelt just like my car...:lol

Personally, I am taking it easy, and I just put 20 litres in per full tank, so basically, I stick 50l of diesel in, and then top up with a 20l tin of veg oil. Car runs smother, but definitely has a lot less power then when on plain diesel. We have a steepish hill on the way down to my mums, and on diesel, I can top the hill from a standing start at 65mph, but on the veg mix, even on a rolling start, it only makes 50mph.

Sounds like you've got a blocked fuel filter or lazy pump there mate

I had a fully laden car to the roof with a passenger going up a 17% hill in the Isle of Man and was still doing 85mph at the top and thats running 100% WVO

Yep, veg has a higher, yep read it carefully, higher cetane value than diesel so should if anything give more power. It is thicker so increases the likelihood of the pump to suck in air through the fuel line joints etc. and flow slower through main fuel filter and/or the banjo bolt mini filter reducing max revs.

Thinned with that much diesel shouldn't make much difference at all, often it's thinned by petrol upto 20% that brings it quickly down to the viscosity of diesel but does reduce cetane to below that of diesel, hence the use of cetane enhancers like veggie boost to bring it back to normal.

Veg will also initially pick up any dirt that may be lying around your diesel tank/pipes and deposit them in the fuel filter if you have any that is. Haven't yet suffered a blocked fuel filter in 10K miles on mixed SVO\WVO\Petrol\Diesel apart from an initial mini filter issue.

Seems to me LF that something in your fuel circuit isn't dealing with the veg as well as it should.

Change short fule pipe to clear, from filter to pipe across bulk head you may be gettin air sucked in.

I was. Going to plumb back in heat exchanger this weekend.

I'll give it a look once I have finished re-building her after the accident.

After the fiasco with filling her up with petrol when I first got her, and having it all pumped out, I don't think there will be any gunk in the tank. I also did a fuel filter change just after it.

At the last service which was about 10k miles after the filter change, and after I had run 2 tanks of diesel/veg mix through her I did a second fuel filter change. I did that specifically after what I had read on here about the filter getting blocked. To be honest, compared to how bad the first filter looked, the second filter change looked perfect inside, even the diesel that ran back out of it into the jug was perfectly clean so I am pretty sure everything is OK in that department.

The pipes under my truck, are all in very good condition, so again, not sure it is air being pulled in, but since changing the short pipe in the engine bay is so easy, I will give it a go. After reading on here, I don't think my truck has the banjo filter either, I forget what made me think this, but there was a whole thread on it a while back, and something made it look like mine was of the era they were not fitted.

Is there a way of checking this without actually dismantling everything as I'd love to know if I have one or not :thumb2
