I'm a bit late - as always, but I'm running around 50-60% SVO and have no problems, apart from a bit more lumpy than usual n a cold morning :thumb2

but the way veg oil prices are going there isn't going to be much of a saving soon (there's not much now!) so be careful before spend you cash on heaters!

Not sure where folk are looking but 20 litres for £16 @ Makro a couple of weeks back :thumb2 To be fair youre right about the supermarkets especially if you have a taste for first press virgin olive :D

everything was different two weeks back, go back and have look at the price today

and for anyone considering it, even if you could afford it, olive is one oil that DOES go like candle wax in the fridge :lol

we've just sold a great big poncy mirror to a chinese bloke in West London for his restaurant - he thinks its wonderful!:lol Shame it was probably made just down the road from where he used to live! :thumb2

i was given my heat exchanger...

the pipe work was just under £20 :)

i would consider a gradual increase in SVO mix as the weather gets milder and look to modifying with heaters ready for next winter :thumb2

tip:

ask any plumbers you know to let you have the heat exchangers from any of the boilers the replace...

what about an extra long matrix hose, an wrapping it around your fuel filter :augie

see some like that on ebay, but one site i was reading up on didnt say they were much good, at heat transpher

There is always the worry that with a good exchanger that you can get the oil too hot! it could easily be 70 degrees c (or more) on a long journey, would that harm the pump seals?

I made enq on that one and the answer is basically so long as your pump is in servicable good nick youll be ok. Thats because ts designed to take radiant and conducted heat from the engine for many years in any case :thumb2

nice to know :thumb2

Coiled metal pipe inserted into the hose run and around the filter does achieve a temp change but its not particularly efficient.

I was in the process of manufacturing a copper coil the very week i sold the truck :D

not very efficient, but - cheap and cheerful and maybe better than nothing :thumb2

my logic was lots of small efforts make one big push to keep the oil warmed :thumb2.

It was going to be in addition to another electrical heater in line before the heater.

I also had a 12v thermostatically controlled immersion heater similiar to those you get in fish tanks or home brew set ups. it was fully adjustable. When I checked it out it kept an uncovered bucket of svo outside on a cold day very easily at 10 degrees. Admittedly it took a while to reach that temp and it was only about 10 litres.

that was next on the hit list.

Total cost would have been about £50 for all of those bits and im confident it would ae kept the oil flowing apart from extreme weather.

I was planning a twin tank start up diesel system for those times.

Technically very easy to do :thumb2

an insulated fuel tank would also help, and you can get some 10mm think stuff that has the same rating as 10 inches of normal glass fibre loft insulation a 12 heat mat under the tank too? Just ideas :nenau
