Ok, finally sussed the MoT failure having just been down the garage to chat with the owner.

This might be a common problem so worth checking yourself as well!

Basically, as you will see from the exploded diagram, the two-part wheel bearing sits on the stub axle (what Nissan calls a 'knuckle' in the diagram) and is secured in place and adjusted by the wheel bearing lock nut. On wifeys truck, the thread on both the stub axle AND the locking nut are stripped or deformed in the centre section, making it impossible to properly tighten the bearing up - which has allowed play in the bearing which has consequently worn out.

So, what I need if someone has one, is the stub axle (or 'knuckle'), complete with the bearing locking nut/ring (the two bits I've outlined in red - they are common, it seems, to both fixed and auto hubs so not worried if its from a late MkII).....but its crucial that the thread on BOTH is in excellent condition, i.e. the locking ring will wind the full length of the stub axle thread without any play.

Can you PM me if you've got one, that ideally I could do with getting here to the garage by Tuesday?

Thanks in anticipation. :thumb2

Hi Lacroupade, I can't help you with the part, but it might help your quest if you state which side of the vehicle you need within this post.

Also where you are in the country.

It certainly looks an easy fix if you have the right part.

Good luck with the search.

Duh at me!

Its drivers side front.

Not worried about a s/h part on this occasion because (i) Nissan will want £300+ I'm sure, and (ii) theres nothing to wear but the threads.

I have complete Mk 1 assembly here both sides, but am in Bexhill South Coast, I am going to Harlow in Essex on Monday but not near wales, could post I suppose, up to you, Rick

Rick thanks for your kind offer - t'would be easy for me to arrange collection but cncfabs has raised the spectre of ABS and I'm now uncertain if or how that might influence any difference between the hub used on an ABS-equipped vehicle and an earlier non-ABS one...?

I think I'll have to nip back to the garage on Monday and take a look to make sure I can use a MkI hub......thanks again though, I'll be straight back if its usable. :thumb2

that is a good point I have not seen an abs one so do not know but would assume there will be a mounting point for the sensor which my Mk 1s will not have, Rick

Why can't life be simpler?

I often think there would be a market for well-built, low-tech vehicle thats cheap to run and maintain but might not necessarily look like a bleedin Ferrari! :lol

Ah yes, the good old Model T. Only this time let us choose any colour.:D

Seriously, Paul, good point. Hands up all those who can think of such a car, or even best bits from various models and have a hybrid.

Some features I'd like to see return, floor headlight dip switch, column gears, bench seat in front, old Citreon D headlights, ( I know they are coming back on some cars), mechanical door handles (not central locking), fly windows, chrome bumpers (none of this plastic crap), proper window winders, real comfortable seats, and proper steel used throughout, stuff you can panel beat without needing to replace the whole panel.

That will do for starters, sounds like a Lada or Polski Fiat.:doh:doh

You're showing our age matey LMAO! :lol

but especially +1 on the floor-mount dipswitch.

If size wasn't an issue, a good old MkII Zephyr would do for me, but it needs good fuel economy and be manoeuvrable in town really. I might invent something and call it a 'Mini'. No don't laugh, it might work.....:augie

The Chinese have had the solution for years...... :nenau

hasten to add they are the nearside as off side not so easy to see, Rick

SORTED.

Found one from a MkIII in a scrapper up at Welshpool (Nissan 1st) - so just a three-hour round trip up that shitty caravan/lorry/tractor-strewn Shrewsbury road to contend with so I can get it back today in order that the garage can get the truck off the ramp. :doh

So, truck back tomorrow - except wifey has cleared off to Abu Dhabi for the week on business so not only have I got to pay the bill to get the thing back, I'm going to have to tax it as well!!! Kin elll!!!!! ::mad::mad::mad:

I forgot to point out that I went to London in it last week to collect a kennel dog from Kew, only to find out at Beaconsfield, surrounded by about 500 coppers en route to the riots, that both tax and MoT were expired.....bloody women!

It's the drivers resolvability to ensure the vehicle is legal to drive. Did you give them the love glove to get away with it?
