Can anyone help? The front end of my T2 3.0 Di wallows over yumps and bumps whereas the back is fine.

I've changed the front shocks to ES 9000 which has helped, but to my way of thinking the front springs are too soft.

Does anyone know whether you buy stiffer torsion bars? And if so from where.

tbr will do them i should think and youll get 10% off for being club memeber

Have you checked your front ARB bushes? Also have you reset or at least checked the front ride height?

One reason I haven't gone for Pro-comps is I'm did wonder about the suitability of their valving as they just build shocks of a certain length and don't produce shocks valved to suit set vehicles, never heard back from the guys i sent some old shocks to for a quote, I'll have to chase that up.

Hi,
As far as im aware no one makes uprated torsion bars for the T2 or Mavs all you can do is wind up the bars i think some other members will say this as well but you never know.

I tried to get uprated bars when I changed to ES9000's and new rear springs.

Could not find anyone who did them

I hate torsion bars with a passion

Hi folks if you wanna try www.purenissan.com they have uprated torsion bars, thats where I got mine from and LA Supertrux is going to fit them and the 3inch lift kit in sept, hope this helps cheers Paul

Upgraded torsion bars

Thanks for all your help.

I've contacted OEC and they do a pair at £260. BUT only up to model yr 2000. Is there any difference in the suspension on a 3.0 Di 2002 T2??

LA Supertrux do 25% increase, but nobody there today who can give a price!! No luck with TBR yet.

I think coil overs are a bit OTT for my requirements.

Will keep you up to date on progress - cheers.

You can get coil over shocks as a replacement for both the torsion bars & dampers; but I wouldn't like to think how much, and Hummingbird feels that there would need to be strengthening of the existing suspension mounts to cope. The link is http://www.afn.pt/v2/produtos_lista.php?modelo_id=61# in case you are interested.

I thought with coil overs you leave the torsion bars in place.

I would have thought that the whole point of coilovers is to replace the exsiting damper & spring set up, AFAIK the purpose is to allow fine tuning of the set up /ride height on most vehicles, not sure about ours, but keeping the torsion bar in place would seem to defeat the point?

Uprated torsion bars

Having looked around on the web a bit I found a Spanish or Portugese company (AFN) that do a coil over shox kit (amongst all sorts of other 4x4 stuff) but it requires extra brackets to be fitted so the top mount is higher in the arch.

I can't really see the point in coil overs on T2/Mav's. The only real advantage is that you can change the spring rate from that of the standard torsion bars.

Ride height is easily adjustable on the torsion bars so theres no advantage there.

Suspension travel is limited by the wishbone design and the CV joints not the torsion bars so again there is no gain.

If that sort of thing floats your boat they'll "look cool" under the arches but then so would a st of remote canister 3 way adjustable shocks.

To go back to aj_shotley's 'problem'. Have you set the ride height to stabdard on the front? I found this made the truck handle way better. It seems an anachronism that raising the suspension makes it handle bettr but Nissan meant it to be at a certain height and to work properly at that height. As the truck settles over the years on its suspension the geometry of the wishbones means that the wheels move further into positive camber, this means the tyres do not sit straight on the road and accounts for poor tyre wear and loss of front end grip.

I really would look at the front ride height and also the condition of the anti roll bar bushes.

The adjusting collars often sieze up on coil over due to dirt etc so you have to keep them clean if you want to adjust them for road/off road use

It's not a question of clean but of using the correct anti seize grease, you need something better than just copper slip, also they should be wrapped in tap after adjustment to prevent the ingress of water and dirt.

At the end of the day on 4 wheels coilovers are really only for ease of setting ride height and more importantly corner weights. Once set they should be left. Winding them up or down will do more than just adjust ride height, camber, castor and toe will all be changed, any adjustment needs to be accompanied by a full geometry check and resetting.

My previous reference to spring rate was in reference to the ease of changing the springs as 2¼" springs in all rates and lengths are readily available.

Uprated torsion bars

Thanks Hummingbird, I put 5 turns on each of the front adjusters this afternoon and went for a drive down a bumpy lane, it is certainly better!!
Before I go mad and increase it any more, can anyone tell me where I can find out the original dimensions/ride heights etc. Looked in Tech Specs, all sorts of useful stuff but nothing on suspension.

Might not need to change torsion bars after all!

Uprated torsion bars

Oops. Just coming out from posting last reply and saw hummingbirds info about 26 threads down. With loads of info.

But would still appreciate any info for 2002 model 3.0di - ta

Have sent you PM, newer model is the same. It's just old ones like mine that cause difficulties.
