Back on track Clive, it sounds more to me like a body panel "popping" so maybe your body lift/suspension lift has twisted the body slightly and causing this problem, roof panel comes to mind as most likely, Rick

Sorry Rick :naughty

Good call that but as he's had longer springs and spring spacers fitted, I'd say it's much more probable that they are moving around in their cups causing the noise

Thanks Rick, it's not quite that sort of noise, and it is lower down, under the car.

I was quite surprised to see this thread on here again, I thought it had run it's course and been forgotten.

Since I wrote this, I have had time to do a lot more looking into it. I was always pretty sure it was the back of the car, but Suz put me onto a red herring, by convincing me it was from the front her side. Unfortunately, she thought the noise I was talking about was the clicking/banging from the worn anti-roll bar. Having checked all the front suspension, fixed the anti-roll bar and re-indexed the torsion bars, I was happy it was not anything to do with that, and having the lack of that noise, made Suz realise we were talking about a different noise.

I then checked the exhaust system from front to rear, and found a loop hanger that had gone on one side, so changed that, but that failed to stop it.

After the talk on here of the pan handle, I gave it a good look over, but realised that actually, as it does it when the suspension is compressed, rather than extended, having longer springs would make no difference, as it was actually going back to factory settings, when the noise appeared, so actually less likely to be the issue.

I recently got a set of ramps, so I could get right under the car, with the suspension still roughly in the "normal" position. and again checked all the bushes, pipes, cables. you name it. There was not a sign of anything rubbing, knocking or out of place. While laying under the car, I started to rock it from side to side, and finally discovered what was making the noise...

Pretty close.... when the spring compresses, it un-coils slightly, and the sound is the end of the spring moving back just a fraction on the spacers. The spacer is a nice hollow bit of tube, about 3" high, and 6 or so inches in diameter, so acts as a sound chamber, amplifying the noise, which then travels along the axle and chassis. A bit of spray on grease stopped it until the next lot of rain...

Not sure how long it would last but you could cut some rubber tubing or hose pipe & slot it over the coil of the spring where it contacts the spacer. BTW are your spacers fitted on top or bottom of the springs

It has/had a rubber cup washer over the end of the spring already, which is presumably why it did not do it from day one.

I put the spacer on the Axle end (bottom) of the springs. I looked for info on the web, and it seemed to be as broad as it was long as to which end to put them.

My spacers don't have caps or the likes? I get no noises?

Still on the subject of grease I'd just smother the thing in a heavy grease :lol
