I do it all the time as do millions of other drivers

WTF is the world coming too

The point is the driver was not aware that the other drivers were actually speeding and breaking the law when he flashed them.
If he was aware they were speeding then fair cop.:doh

Sometimes along country lanes I flash other drivers to warn of a hazzard, eg deer on Cannock Chase, horses around the corner, a flooded road..

Something that might cause the driver in front to suddenly apply the brakes which may cause the vehicle behind to run into the back of the other car. Accident prevention and hazardous awareness.

I think he should appeal, what a waste of tax payer's money.
Will TomTom be fined for telling people where the speed cameras are?:nenau

Given that the powers that be always claim that speed cameras and the like are not there with the aim of catching the speeding motorist but with the aim of preventing speeding, surely he was actually aiding the police officer in the carrying out of his duty.

Sadly, a bit of digging reveals that the prosecution sticks - thanks to a test case in the High Court in 1910 (!!) where it was found that AA patrolmen on bicycles who warned oncoming motorists of police presence were guilty of obstructing them in their duties.

The law, sir, is an ass.

Shame Lord Denning is no more :naughty

Welcome to my world :doh
Total tossers (sorry Daved) but it's meant to be a "Safety Camera" :nenau
I must admit to parking in front of the camera vans locally and lifting the bonnet to try and fix that sqeek, usuall pisses them off a bit, but I haven't the time to enjoy it fully:lol
I thought you could advise others of a road hazzard ahead. There must be one surely for plod to put a safety camera there , as they only put them at accident black spot dont they ? :p
Well there we are then, my estimation of the camera squad reaches a new low for the new year, oh joy:(

dont flash the head lights any more chuck the hazards on cant do any thing about that can they ??

hazards on a moving vehicle = 3 points!

Even when you are towing it's illegal if it's moving

how can he be obstructing them in their duties, when their duty is to prevent speed and accidents....isnt that what he was trying to do? so tell me, isnt he actually HELPING them, in their duties? which i believe is a claim he made in court.

this is a classic example of our system yet again pounding down the innocent decent people of this country untill all we have left, are c*nts.

but surely they need to prove that you weren't just flashing your mate :augie

But as Pete says, the police should be grateful for the publics assistance in slowing other drivers down....;)

"The [respondent] told the police that he had been signalling because he had intended to drive into the lay-by but had changed his mind. It was apparent to the court, from the video evidence, that the lorry, which was limited to a speed of 50 mph, was approaching the lay-by at a moderate speed, and that at all material times the cars that were passing it were doing so also at a moderate speed and were proceeding only somewhat faster than the lorry. Accordingly none of the motorists seen in the video appeared to be exceeding any applicable speed limit. The police accepted that no vehicle could be seen to slow or swerve as a result of the [respondent's] signal."

they mist have worked hard to convinve themselves he was guilty of this, it's bloody stupid.

To flash or not to flash

Nothing new in this type of conviction motorists have been posecuted before for warning motorists about speed traps.

To be honest my view is that we should avoid warning motorists about such police activity as it defeats the object of catching unobservant or dangerous drivers and there are plenty around just look at all those School rum Mums with a handheld mobile clamped to their heads.

If you drive over the speed limit and your road observations are so poor you cannot see a Huge White Police Camera Van or a PC with a handheld speedgun wearing a flourescent jacket then are you likely to spot a young child who might run into the road ?

Isn't being a good driver all about control - 10% car control - 90 % self control ?

I have been driving for 45 years and presently drive around 40K miles a year between work & pleasure. I have never been done for speeding and have had one caution during the fuel crisis in 1974 for exceeding the 50 mph limit on a dual carriageway where the normal limit was 70 mph. It would be unrealistic of me to say I never exceed the speed limit but when I have I crank up my road observation to suit.

As I have grown older and a little wiser I have avoided exceeding the 30 & 40 limits not to avoid getting some penalty points but to avoid seriously injuring or killing another road user.

Can you imagine what it must be like to live with the consequences of being involved in a serious injury road collision with the knowledge that the outcome might have been different if you were not speeding ?

Sadly some drivers do not have enough grey matter between their ears to ever realise what they have done or might do.

Dont mean to preach just need to have my say.

I see your point, i'm not condoning speeding, and on a road with a 70 mph limit for cars, surely that's fast enough anyway!

But, i can't see the value in prosecuting this man, surley the point of speed traps is to set and example, make people scared to speed for fear of bine caught, under the assumption that the law and reasonable expectation has failed.

Is the point to make sure they catch more people to make more money - or to improve road saftey? if it's the later this man has done no harm.

Dam shame that the police are not so vigilant when it comes to drug dealing scrotes or pond life that beat up the elderly, or break into houses this country is F£$%^ed and until we start to punish the true law breakers then it will never change

Detecting those types of crime is a lot harder, than waiting for someone to drive past at 44 in a 40 zone.

Exactly :thumb2
The camera things are not meant to be "Speed traps" are they? I thought the big vans with a scroat inside were "Safety Camera" vans, helping the community by giving it a small commision on the fines accrued.
The inference is certainly that it wasn't an accident black spot but a Bizzy in the hedge with his ray gun trying get some easy money off stupid drivers( sorry that should be "Cash cows" )
Before you all jump on my cavalier ways, I'm not condoning "Speeding" either, but even macabethiel has admitted to travelling too fast ! :augie
