Hi.
My disco has alloy wheels in good nick ,I am having problems with tyres going down due to air leaking between rim and tyre on 3 wheels.:doh
I beleave the problem is being caused by dirt/grit being forced between the two .when going off road.
I am thinking of having a go at stripping the wheels down myself cleaning the rims up, re inflating perhaps using some washing up liquid on tyre beading .
ive got compressor so no problem re inflating and was thinking of using hi lift jack to break beading off wheel rim.
does anyone know of a bead sealing compound
ps.
ive changed a few tyres using tyre irons in the past and still have them.

its leaked ever since.:doh

hi briggie.
No problem with any tyre beading or rim.
When you lay wheel on ground and run water around rim I can see where seal isnt working and thus letting air out.
I am running BFG all terrains .
tyre wall seams to be quite soft deflects easy.
Thus allowing mud/grit to get in.

i seem to remember reading about something you put into the tyre valve when inflating and it reacts with air stopping your tyres going flat , but i cant remember what its called .

there are some inflater compounds that you put into tyres and if you get a nail ect it reacts with the air ans seals it.
dont want to go this route to expensive. plus total loss when you change tyre.
There is a black compound tyre fitters brush onto rim to seal bad rims .

just got this off google

Chrome wheel leaks around rim. Do tire sealants that say they fix bead leaks work and are they safe?
I have had the rims wire brushed and remounted several times. Still lose about 4lbs/day to eventually totally flat. Instead of incurring expense of a new wheel, I am hoping a tire sealant can sufficiently repair this for the life of the tire. Some products advertise they will do this, but I am not sure how safe or effective or if the product claims are true and accurate.

get the tyre taken off the rim..sand it smooth and simplypaint around the beading...the freash paint will act as a sealing agent...jobs a good'n.

if your tire is up against the rim and just not sealing. the auto parts store has bead sealer it is what the tire shops use it's liquid rubber I don't know if they have small cans because I just buy the quarts

Ian if theres any damage obvious answer is clean and repaint next yre change but whilst the best solution its possibly not the most practical.

I had a similar problem on an older caravan a bit back. I used some of that "goo" that you put in to help stop deflation if you get a puncture (NOT the after puncture foam stuff)

Its aimed mainly at the tread area but a chap in the know :naughty explained in simple terms to me that it can help your problem. It finds its way to the point of any air seepage.

On the old van they kept their pressure spot on after it was used :thumb2

I put it in the jeep tyres and had a leaky valve insert (replaced once spotted of course), it managed to clog that up too :thumb2

Leaving aside the puncture bits two massive benifits. 1/ it helps with the balance (works similar to powder) 2/ If its a little leak you wont see any on the outside, if its significant youll see it appear (green or white) at the relevant point.

And before anyone jumps in it does not rot your tyres nor does it prevent a conventional puncture repair (water based and washes out.....been there had it done)

May just solve it for you :thumb2

the stuff Ive used is from this guy who is very helpful

Ps the bit I had left over went into the mountain bike tyres and has worked , they laugh in the face of thorns :thumb2

Hells bells Ian, I was composing my reply whilst you posted (1 min apart!) so i dont feel as daft now repeating what youve said :lol:lol:lol

Try the sealant it does work :thumb2 though 4 psi a day does seem to suggest repaint may be best :nenau

we use a thick clear grease like compound on large earthmoving tyres, we get it from our local tyre depot,( looks a bit like vasaline)

If the over pressure does not work, LOC TITE make a sealant which you paint on - if its bad , but it will mean tyre off rim job - road salt causes havoc with alloy rims !!
