Just advanced it about 1mm from the factory marks. Made quite a difference. Bit livelier setting off and pulls slightly better. Starts without any uneven running on veggie now too. Best of all, there used to be an ever so slight hesitation at around 16-1700 rpm when pulling, barely noticeable, and that's gone.
Maybe a tiny bit harsher when pulling but I can't be certain. Fuel consumption appears unaffected.
It's an inline pump on a NA TD42
Check for original timing marks scribed on top front edge of pump and timing housing, if none there, make some(important).
Loosen 4 nuts behind timing cover/housing/front of pump, loosen 2 nuts at rear of pump to mounting bracket onto block, crack off injector pipes on top of pump to allow movement.
Turn pump anticlockwise when looking from front of engine. Literally all you need is the thickness of the scribe marks or a tiny bit more.
Don't go mad, diesel timing is very accurate unlike petrol.
Re-tighten everything and test drive. Listen for excessive diesel knock/clatter and black smoke indicating too far advanced.
I've also screwed my fuel screw back in a quarter of a turn (less fuel) and it hasn't reduced power.
Altogether, since I've owned it and turned up the fuel, set valve clearances, removed the cyclone prefilter, fitted the snorkel and done this timing, it goes far better now. Next on the list is to get rid of the tiny bored flexi in the exhaust, I looked inside and it must be about 1.5" in there, and maybe fit a straight through silencer.
