trouble changing fuel filter (seized)

hello, i'm new to this website today. I was doing some maintenance on my terrano 2.7 td today (R reg-97)and ran into problems changing the fuel filter. I cant get it to unscrew, have tried wd40, different filter wrenches etc. and have only succeeded in denting and scratching the old filter which is probably unusable now. Nightmare!! Its the same filter that was on there when I bought it earlier in the year so could have been on there for years. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks, Rob S

hi rob s i know the feeling have you taken the filter and plunger off the truck ?

if you have put the housing in the vice then whack a screw driver straight through the old filter then ease it round .

it should budge that way

if you havent got a vice what i done was put me foot on the housing on the floor then whack a screw driver straight through then it should again turn.

make sure you pierce the filter half way down though

Most first time posters have issues with their front Auto hubs or their rear Limited slip diff.

Both easily sorted.

Some have issues trying to change the oil filter, but not aware of many issues with the fuel filter as it is easy to get to.

I assume you are undoing it in the correct direction, as you are doing it from the side.

There are issues with using cheap fuel filters, as they don't always seal, so it maybe the previous owner over tightened it to get it to seal.

What make is the old filter?

i wouldnt use the screwdriver method just get your sen the removal tool for a tenner at halfords..

you cant beet having the tool for the job and you only need to buy it once

Been there more than once, you might have to use a chain type filter remover, the strap types are sometimes not strong enough. The filter can will become very distorted but it will come off. As suggested above removal from the car does make the task easier. The problem is usually caused by no oil on the seal and over-tightening during fitting.

Its bad enough on a car but on an almost new aircraft engine oil filter it is a very scarey procedure as any resultant damage costs thousands to repair!!

But do ensure you are turning the filter the correct way.

When refitting the filter a finger of oil on the rubber seal should prevent the problem next time.

why don't you just undo the two fuel lines and remove, put in a vice or something, that's all I did when I had the same issue....

if you haven't got a vice, remove the two top bolts, turn the whole thing upside down, and bolt it back on. Break the seal by hand then unbolt it again and remove it form the car before undoing fully. Unless you want stinky diesel everywhere. Renew the jubilee clips with good quality ones or you may get air leaks. And don't forget to fill the filter with diesel before refitting.

change the fuel line to clear ( 8mm ) so you can see if you get any air leaks in the future..( just an idea )

Good idea as long as you dont introduce a poor connection that lets air in. :doh

Got it done today, all looks good. Probably a stupid question but if its driving and running smoothly does that mean i've bled the air successfully? I only ask as its a manual pump and I couldnt judge when it got harder to press just did it for a few minutes then it started and ran fine.

When my filter didn't seal, there was white smoke, rough running etc. until I bought a better quality one.

The test will be tomorrow morning, if there's a leak you will know.:thumb2

yes, but I would have pumped it until it wouldn't budge before starting it. Could well be ok, but time will tell!

when i changed fuel filter head for 1 with out primmer pump filled fuel filter up with diesel and turned the key ,the lift pump in the ip is very strong so should not take long to pull more fuel up even if there is air in the system unless ur lift pump is on its way out
