I suppose you could call a splice a special knot but all knots come back on themselves so causing a week point, a splice just copies the lay of the lay of the rope for a minimum of 4 tucks that is the two ends are interleaved with each other, as strong as the original with just a little thickening at the joint, Rick

I splice my mooring lines, put an eye in each end, quite easy with 3 plaid rope, it's the first tuck that goes back on itself is the difficult bit.
With nylon rope, you melt the ends with a flame to stop the ends unravelling.

During the war... My father in law spliced the steel control cables on the spitfires and the like, as part of the maintenance crew. Now that's what I call a splice.:thumb2
