The timing chain on my Terrano 2.4 petrol (64000 miles) rattles briefly on startup only.Is this normal (until oil pressure build up ?)or does the chain/tensioner need changing.Advice welcome as don't want to end up with a snapped chain. The engine is very quiet when running but that chain noise worries me.

Apologies if this is a stupid question but are you sure it has a chain? Thought the T2's were mostly gear driven.

petrol engines are chain i believe noisy like the old sierra's .
but absolutely no idea . unless its really noisy . i guess id just leave it , and let it warm up gently

Oops! Thankfully there's people here who know's a lot more than me about these things.

As far as I know (not much, according to the current Mrs 4wheel)the 2.7 has gears and the 2.4 is a chain.I reckon the rattle lasts about a second or two at most on startup. I do warm it up gently as you suggest but .......?

i can see your worries. but the expense of sorting it far outweighs the value of the truck.

why not sell it and buy a similar tdi (gear driven) no problems and live forever. i can see the sense in that . you would get your money back on the fuel consumption alone

or live with it ... most sierra owners managed . i did :thumbs

The 2.4 petrol suffers from this, the tensioner slippers break up and as you can hear the chain rattles till oil pressure over extends the tensioner plunger the man problem is that while it is rattling it is hitting the ali casing and will wear through in to the water way in short order, replace the chain and tensioners now but do not buy the Nissan chain at £80 odd too dear, you can get chain from Kent bearings or similar at a fraction of that, the only difference is the Nissan one has two bright links for timing, but you can mark these yourself from the old chain, I did mine with the engine out, but it is possible in situe but you do need to drop the front of the sump a little as the timing case is trapped between the head and sump, you also need two special seals for the main oil way other wise it is gasket goo, Rick

Timing chain

Oh Shugar! That's not good news. The problem is if I sell it I will loose on the deal anyway so it is a catch 22 situation.Well thanks for the info.I will now have to make some decisions as sounds like it could result in a major problem.

You and me both pal, mines the same. Dont want to change my motor due to the money i've already put into it not to mention the gas conversion... :doh

Sounds just the same as what you have said, horrible nasty rattle on start up for 1-2 secs and really quite loud! Now i'm worried too, ignorance is bliss :augie

Timing chain.

Ok ,done some serious homework. Can get a complete timing chain kit for £140;That includes gears and seals. My local Nissan stealer wants £95 for the chain and then had to ask for the other bits one by one.Total about £350 - 400.Maverick bits were slightly cheaper.I suppose the factor kit is made in China but then for 400 squid I could buy a banger with 12mths MoT.Other than the chain the T2 is in top nick.
So,firstly I am going to flush the engine, replace the filter and fill up with a synthetic 10W30 as I don't know what the previous owner used.If things don't quieten down then it's a new kit for me.Thanks for all the top tips,I will let you know how things turn out.

Can you send me the details of where you got the kit from? I know a shit hot mechanic so I think that has to be the way forward for me. Already spent too much on it to let it die over £140.00.

Timing chain

Well I took the advice of the wise and bought a diesel T2 ! SWB X reg and just under 35000 miles.(yes 35 !)with FSH.Very reasonable price too.Brilliant condition but needs a few items sorted and then it will be el perfecto.Bodywork is mark free and so is interior but it does have an oil leak(small) on the front r/h drive shaft join. Will sort that out and all should be well. The guy I bought it from bought a Land Rover.Shame.

Returned the 2.4 to the stealer I bought it from as only done 1000 miles in 3 months. He was'nt best pleased but I made a lot of noise and threatened to let Mrs 4wheel loose. That really scared him and he backed off smartly.Thing is when I went for a test run the vehicle was all warm and waiting so no noise from the chain until I got it home and started from cold.Ah well, should have known better.
