I've got a very annoying ticking noise coming from what sounds to behind the dials on the dash, thought it was the Speedo cable but :!: if I turn the fan off it will stop, if i slide the leaver so to circulate the air from inside the car it will stop and if the speed drops below 30mph it stops :?

It doesn't get any faster with the fan turned up, but does get louder the faster you drive :? :?

Any ideas

Am going to remove the dials tomorrow and anything else till I find it

Can't help ya with what it is but I've seen a thread on here before about it. It was a while ago so you will have to search for it.

PS doubt it is the same thing but the clear plastic glass on my speedo cluster chatters away. I haven't done anything with it as it drowneds out the sound of the kids LOL

cheers jim...

I've searched and not found anything like mine that or am searching for the wrong words..

After reading them it does seem to be the speedo like i 1st thought, so why does the heater control's have an effect :?

I'll remove speedo from box and go for a drive tomoz just make sures it's that, then do the dash side and give it some lube 8O ..

thanks JIM your a credit to the club..

ticking noise from dash

hi cannot recall who had a problem but someone had a tea spoon drop into demister duct.

Hi Siweb, not sure why the air recirculate makes a difference unless it has something to do with the change in temperature of the air ducting? but again this casts doubt on the speedo cable. I'm sure if your removing the speedo and having a play you will have more of an idea though.
What Ian says about thing dropping into the air duct may also be true, if you think about it with the fan off there is little or no air passing through the ducting. Also with the lever on recirculate you also have less air flow. May be not as drastic as a spoon but what about something like a paper parking ticket.

Jim

PS "thanks JIM your a credit to the club" only doing what a lot of our members would do when we have the time to help. so thanks but I like to think it's a benefit of joining this club.

It was the Speedo not sure wheather it was the cable or the actual clock, as I cleaned and lubed them both up and the noise stopped 8)

so why the heater controls had an effect on it... is anyone's guess. :?

Ah well... the noise is back

I removed the cable from the gearbox and the clocks from the dash and noise is still there... same again turn fan off or switch to re-circulate and it stops... also found out today that if I turn the fan off and drive fast enough the sound come back  so..... How do you get the ducts out, remove the dash 8O :?:

many thanks...

Sounds like its to do with the air entering the fan, if you remove the windscreen wipers and arms complete and then remove the plastic trim cover along the bottom of the screen you will see where the air goes in to the fan, there is a metal plate on the passenger side if you remove this you can see the fan at the bottom of the intake duct, have a look to see if something has got in that shouldn’t be in there. A word of caution if you remove the metal plate over the air intake make sure you seal the joint well when refitting, as water can enter the housing and then the foot well when it rains.

If you dont find any thing there then it looks like you will have to start to tear the inside apart.

 great, but needs must as i can even hear it now with the tunes turned up

Can you look down through the screen into the vents from the outside? you might be able to see anything that has slipped into the vent that way.

hi siweb.
go to workshop 20 look at pictures 2,3.4.you can see the vent pipes coming off the heater they are only a push fit may be worth looking in there .also the heater motor is at the back of the glove box with connecting pipe running to heater matrix have a look in there.
if you have access to an air line try blowing into all the vents it may move something.
good look .

Right done all the above ideas, apart from anything inside the car, so will make a start on that tomorrow along with the ideas "iandouglas" has laid out.

Thanks guys

Sounds like a leaf or something stuck around the flap that opens and shuts for recirculating the air.

If the noise goes when it's on recycle then it could be moving the item away from the fan when the flap shuts hence the noise stops.

Have a look from inside and use the recirculation by opening and closing to see if you can see the flap working and if anything is stuck on the flap.
