hi all just brought a ford maverick 97 p 2.7 tdi run great apart from surging on tick over between 600 and 800 revs any help greatly appricated tried all sorts driving me crackers :doh
 
hang on a minute (welcome by the way!) please explain your symptoms, because you may have the same issue as me.

now, for me, when idling, i get a weird sort of drop in revs, its very small, but equivalent to a load being put on, such as winding electric window up when its already up, does that make sense? is that the same for you? it gives you the feeling that the idling isnt right, its not confident, and you feel almost like it will stall, but obviously it isnt that bad, am i close?

i currently have a thread on this, and so far ive done a lot of work to my car, but this issue has been present from day one of ownership, and i dont know what it is. Ive checked filters air and fuel, checked earth wires, negative cable, positive cabel to starter, new starter, new igniton switch, new no1 injector, cleaned MAF, new positive lead to starter etc etc (not specificaly for this issue, but this issue has persisted, so non of the above will help!)

my next thing to check, is the battery. when i bought my car, the guy said he changed it when trying to fix a starting issue, so its possible i have a battery issue, have you checked yours? can you "replicate" the issue? what I mean is, I can replicate my issue by simply trying to wind up the passenger window when its already up, and one time i washe dunder the car, and simply holding the brake pedal down aggravated it even more-when dry, it went back to "normal"...
 
very simlier but mines just up and down between 600 and 800 rpms have check for little filter on pump took banjo off no filter so all i can assume some1 has removed it my battery new so no that checked alternator not that but strange thing is there is no engine mangement light on dash board even when u just turn igntion on .
egr???? or could it be maf sensor ????????????:(
 
if it was fuel filter surley it wouldnt drive ok its only idle thats the problem
 
i agree, i dont think its fuel filter. im not sure about missing mini filter though, never checked mine but im going to (i believe some cars have them, others dont)

EGR wont cause that symptom, neither will MAF, but clean the MAF anyway. You should certainly have a MIL light on when key is set to on, mine does, so id check that bulb if you can, or buy a code reader?

have you checked the fuel filter drain pipe? any air locks in there or water?

sorry, i dont have many ideas as i have a similar issue to you! :(

is there any way of puting a shim / spacer in there, maybe like a bike brake cable adjiuster so it "thinks" the pedle is down a touch..

just an idea....
 
needs to be above 1200 rpm to stop it hunting/surging already tried increasing revs but 1200 bit too high for idle speed is a strange 1 but i will get to the bottom ov it checked all vackuum pipes alls good
 
i think its air sucking in somewere just finding it or a sensor down not convinced its owt major
 
I agree Derek i dont think mines anythign major its just annoying and doesnt fill me with confidence, even though its been doing this for well over a year now if not longer.

you say you adjusted idle, how did you do that?
 
quick update blue smoke aswell on idle but goes wen revs increased any more ideas
 
oh..blue smoke is burning oil...woudl explain un uneven idle. you need to have your engine checked, could be a broken seal, gasket issue or something? on mine, i have NO smoke, just the usual puff of light black smoke sometimes, never on acceleration or driving, i never have bluesmoke..!
 
blue smoke ... burning oil , .... is it using a lot of oil ?
 
quick update had injectors out and cleaned put back together injector number 3 causes deisel knock and if u slacken pipe on injector 1 idle perfect which tells me needs new set of injectors o and changed diesel filter it was proper full of crap so was ready will update when ive replaced injectors

oohhh, this sounds interesting matey. i did my No1 injector, but never did the other 3, so if this does it for you, ill do my other three, good luck!
 
going to replace nozzles had injectors to bits so easy job just to change the nozzles as its only the nozzles really that control the spray of diesel into cylinders if there worn they will be spraying uneven amounts causing uneven running so my theory is !!!!!!!!! plus its loads cheaper worth a try u never know will keep u updated !!!!!

nozzles? which bits that! sorry im not very experienced, im gaining experience. ive done my number one injector, but dont necessarily know the correct names for allt he parts i removed! is the nozzle the end of the pipe that sits in the top of the injector, or is it simply the end of the injector?
 
did you manage to sort this? just curious about the injector theory!
 
was offered complete engine £175 which i heard running and was sweet as a nut so i took it gunna go easy route 1st and try injectors out ov it in mine tomas hopefully fingers crossed will be problem sorted
ps wot a bloody heavy engine !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
